Illustrated title page with illustrations of the extermination camps “The labor barrack where we dwelled, covertly studied and prayed”. In the introduction, the publisher writes about the “taking away the books from ‘The People of the Book’” by the “evil men” who destroyed the European Jews and attempted to erase all Hebrew books. All Jewish books were taken to be processed or for some other lowly purpose…and therefore after liberation, the longing and thirst for books is great”. Originally only Tractates Kiddushin and Nedarim were printed, eventually in 1948 a complete set of Talmud was printed in Munich, featuring different illustrations than this original edition.
An important expression of the Jewish people’s eternal bond with the Talmud even in the most distressing of times.

המוציא לאור כותב בהקדמה על “גזילת הספרים מעם הספר על ידי ‘הרשעים’ שהשמידו את יהדות אירופה וניסו להכחיד את כל ספרי היהודים. כל ספרי היהדות נלקחו לעיבוד או לשימוש שפל אחר… ולפיכך, לאחר השחרור התשוקה והצימאון לספרים הוא גדול”. בתש”ו 1946 נדפסו רק מסכתות נדרים וקידושין ובהמשך, בשנת תש”ח (1948), הודפס סט שלם של תלמוד בבלי במינכן עם איור שונה ממהדורה מקורית זו.
ביטוי חשוב לקשר הנצחי של עם ישראל עם הגמרא גם בתקופות האפלות ביותר.
