Introduction to the Siddur authored by R. Naftali Katz, the famed Semichas Chachomim, published here together with the Amsterdam Siddur K’Minhag Poland and Tehillim. Three separate title pages.
R. Naftali Katz (1650-1718), was known from a young age for his piety and diligence. In 1689, he was appointed Rav of Posen. In 1704, he was appointed to the prestigious position as Rav of Frankfurt. In 1711, a big fire broke out in Frankfurt, and he was falsely accused of starting a fire while performing Kabbalistic rituals. As a result, he was jailed, but eventually released, and forced to leave the city. He then moved to Prague and in c. 1718, he decided to ascend to Eretz Yisroel, however he passed away, while in Istanbul, Turkey, where he is buried. He has many distinguished descendants including the Rebbes of Belz. In 1944 whilst in Turkey En-route to Eretz Yisroel R. Aaron of Belz sent a messenger to pray on his behalf at the kever of The Semichas Chachomim and until the present time the Kever continues to be visited.

הקדמה לסידור מאת ר’ נפתלי כץ, בעל הסמיכת חכמים הנודע, שנדפס פה עם סידור אמסטרדם כמנהג פולין ותהילים. שלושה עמודי שער נפרדים.
ר’ נפתלי כץ (ת”י- תע”ח, 1650-1718) נודע עוד מצעירותו כעילוי וגאון, וכבר בשנת תמ”ט 1689 נתמנה לרבה של פוזן. בתס”ד 1704 נתמנה לתפקיד הנכבד כרבה של פרנקפורט, אולם הואשם שלא בצדק בהצתת אש בעת שעסק בקבלה מעשית. כתוצאה מכך נכלא בבית האסורים עד ששוחרר והוכרח לעזוב את העיר. הוא התיישב בפראג ובסביבות תע”ח 1718, החליט לעלות לארץ ישראל. למרבה הצער נפטר עוד בדרך בהיותו באיסטנבול, טורקיה, ושם הובא למנוחות. זכה לצאצאים גדולים ונכבדים, ביניהם אדמו”רי בעלזא. בשנת תש”ד 1944, כשהיה ר’ אהרון מבעלזא בטורקיה בדרכו לארץ ישראל, שלח שליח להתפלל למענו על קבר הסמיכת חכמים.
