For hundreds of years, the etiquette of rabbinical correspondence, mandated poetic expressions often alluding to various verses in Scripture and quotes from Talmudic texts. For this purpose Schriftschtelle were used, to assist both, as a reference tool to important halachic responsa and contemporary events, as well as the appropriate salutations by which to address the rabbinical and community leaders.
Containing much important correspondence, including letters relating to some previously unknown important communal events. Seemingly from the region of Altona and other important German communities of that era. Spanning the gamut of Jewish communal life including electing and appointing rabbinical figures, issues concerning matrimony, civil laws etc.
R. Shimshon Refoel Hirsch (1808 –1888) was a disciple of Chacham Isaac Bernays and R. Yaakov Ettlinger (Aruch L’Ner). Known as an outstanding Talmid Chochom, he served as Rav in various communities in Germany most notably Frankfurt. He battled mightily and incessantly against the reform movement and under his devoted leadership the Jewish community in Germany and in Frankfurt in particular blossomed. Founder of the “Torah im Derech Eretz” philosophy, his contribution to Torah true Judaism is immeasurable.
On the flyleaf there appears a stamp with initials “SRH” indicating that this was, as Rav Hirsch’s personal copy. Undated, seemingly early Eighteenth century. Written by more than one scribe.

במשך מאות שנים, כללי התכתובת הרבנית הכתיבו ביטויים פיוטיים שפעמים רבות רמזו על פסוקים בתנ”ך וציטוטים מהתלמוד. מסיבה זו השתמשו ב”שריפטשל” – הן ככלי עזר עיוני לשו”ת הלכתי חשוב וענייני דיומא, והן עבור דברי הברכה המקובלים לרבנים ומנהיגי ציבור
מכיל תכתובת חשובה רבה, כולל מכתבים הנוגעים לאירועים ציבוריים חשובים שלא היו ידועים קודם לכן. כנראה ממחוז אלטונה וקהילות גרמניות חשובות מאותה תקופה. מקיף את כל קשת החיים הציבוריים בעם ישראל כולל מינוי דמויות רבניות, סוגיות הקשורות לנישואין, חוק אזרחי וכו’
ר’ שמשון רפאל הירש (תקס”ח-תרמ”ח 1808-1888) היה תלמיד של חכם אייזק ברניס ור’ יעקב אטלינגר (ערוך לנר). היה ידוע כתלמיד חכם דגול ושימש כרב בקהילות שונות בגרמניה כשהמוכרת מכולן היא פרנקפורט. הוא לחם בעוז וללא הרף בתנועת הרפורמה, והקהילה היהודית בגרמניה בכלל ובפרנקפורט בפרט פרחה תחת הנהגתו המסורה. מייסד שיטת “תורה עם דרך ארץ”. תרומתו ליהדות התורנית היא לאין ערוך
על דף המגן מופיעה חותמת עם האותיות בגרמנית “ש.ר.ה.”, המעידה על כך שמדובר בעותק אישי של הרב הירש. לא מתוארך, לכאורה מראשית המאה השמונה עשרה. נכתב על ידי יותר מסופר אחד
