Chaim Berlin to the leadership of a Moshav Zekeinim in Yerusholayim, with detailed information of funds raised on their behalf and requesting individual receipts for each donor (listed on the other side, also written by R. Chaim Berlin). Concluding with particularly warm Brochos.
R. Chaim Berlin (1832–1912), son of the illustrious R. Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (Netziv) of Volozhin, was famous for his towering scholarship. A great rabbinical leader, he served in various communities in Russia including Moscow, Kobrin, Yelizavetgrad and Volozhin. In Volozhin, he also served as Rosh Yeshiva alongside his father until the yeshiva was forcibly closed by the Russian authorities. In 1906, he settled in Yerusholayim, where he was elected as assistant Chief Rabbi of the Ashkenazic community. Following the passing of R. Shmuel Salant in 1909, he led the Jerusalem Rabbinate and headed many of Jerusalem’s charitable institutions. His complete dedication to the community endeared him to the many different religious factions of the city.

מכתב אוטוגרפי מר’ חיים ברלין להנהלת מושב זקנים בירושלים עם מידע מפורט על כספים שגויסו למען המוסד ובקשת קבלות אישיות לכל תורם (התורמים רשומים בצד השני גם ע’י ר’ חיים ברלין). המכתב מסתיים בברכות לבביות.
רבי חיים ברלין (תקצ”ב-תרע”ג) בנו של הגאון הנודע הנצי”ב מוואלאזין היה גאון אדיר השולט בכל מכמני התורה. היה מגדולי הרבנים ושימש במשרות רבניות חשובות ברוסיא כמו מוסקבה, קוברין, ווואלאזין. בוואלאזין גם כיהן כראש הישיבה יחד עם אביו לפני שנסגרה הישיבה בידי השלטון הרוסי. בשנת תרס”ו עזב את רוסיא ועלה לירושלים ששם נתמנה כרב ראשי משני למקהלות האשכנזים שם. ולאחר פטירת הרב שמואל סאלאנט בשנת תרס”ט נשאר הוא במשרה זו בלבדו והתמסר במסירות לכל צרכיה המרובים. יחד עם זה עמד בראש הרבה ממוסדות החסד שבעיר והודות להתמסרותו בשבילן, היה ר’ חיים נערץ על כל החוגים השונים שבה.
