Autograph letter by R. Yehuda Zev Segal, written Motzoei Purim 1937 to R. Tzvi Eliezer Goldstein.
The letter opens by apologizing for the delayed response due to the birth of his daughter. He writes that Purim is the perfect day to ask for forgiveness since Purim is also a day of atonement. He then delves into some Kabbalistic concepts relating to birth of a child including that the soul of a Jew has no nourishment other than from Torah and Mitzvos quoting from R. Chaim Vital. With a lengthy explanation on the concept of Tefilah, stating that the “Tumim” used to daven for a long period of time and that he didn’t worry about his critics, saying that the time of prayer was very dear to him since it is time spent with HaShem. He continues with many insights on the concept of davening and concludes with many warm blessings.
R. Yehuda Zev Segal (1910-1993), was born to R. Moshe Yitzchok Segal, a great Talmid Chochom, who served as Rosh Yeshiva of the Manchester Yeshiva. At the age of 20, he went to the Mirrer Yeshiva, where he studied B’Chavrusa with R. Chaim Shmuelevitz and became extremely close to the Mashgiach R. Yechezkel Levenstein. In 1933, he returned to England assisting his father in his Yeshiva and eventually succeeded him as Manchester Rosh Yeshiva. He was world famous as a great Tzaddik particularly known for his emphasis on Mussar, Shmiras Ha’Lashon and Tefilah and thousands across the world would seek his brochos.

מכתב אוטוגרפי שכתב ר’ יהודה זאב סגל במוצאי פורים תרצ”ז (1937), לר’ צבי אליעזר גולדשטיין.
הוא מתחיל בהתנצלות על שהתעכב מלענות עקב לידת בתו. הוא כותב כי פורים הוא היום המתאים לבקשת סליחה שכן פורים הוא גם יום של כפרה. לאחר מכן הוא מעמיק במושגים קבליים הנוגעים ללידת ילד כולל העניין שלנשמה יהודית אין חיות מלבד מהתורה והמצוות, תוך שהוא מצטט מר’ חיים ויטאל. כולל הסבר ארוך על עניין התפילה. הוא מזכיר כי “התומים” נהג להתפלל משך שעה ארוכה, וכי הוא לא שת ליבו למלעיגים עליו באומרו כי זמן התפילה הוא שהות עם הקב”ה ולכן יקר לו. הוא ממשיך לכתוב עוד תובנות רבות בענין התפילה וחותם בברכות לבביות רבות.
ר’ יהודה זאב סגל (תר”ע- תשנ”ג 1910-1993), נולד לר’ משה יצחק סגל תלמיד חכם עצום וראש ישיבת מנצ’סטר. בגיל 20 נסע לישיבת מיר שם למד בחברותא עם ר’ חיים שמואלביץ, וגם התקרב מאוד להמשגיח ר’ יחזקאל לוונשטיין. בשנת תרצ”ג (1933) חזר לאנגליה לסייע לאביו בישיבה, עד שירש את מקומו כראש ישיבת מנצ’סטר. התפרסם בכל העולם כצדיק עצום, ובמיוחד בהקפדתו היתירה על ענייני מוסר, שמירת הלשון ותפילה. אלפים מכל קצוות תבל נהרו אליו לברכות.
