Autograph letter by R. Yitzchok Elchonon Spector to R. Shmuel Yosef Finn of Vilna, seemingly regarding a situation in the city of Klibanau, where the sanctity of the Beis HaK’nesses was at stake due to the efforts of those who were not fully committed to the Torah. He asks that R. Finn use his connections there to remedy the situation.
R. Yitzchok Elchonon Spector (1817-1896), was renowned for his Torah genius, diligence and righteousness. He was the supreme Torah authority of his generation and led Lithuanian and Russian Jewry for many years with perception and wisdom. He served in the Rabbinate from 1837. In 1864, he was appointed to the distinguished position as Rav of Kovno. His responsa and novella were printed in Be’er Yitzchok, Nachal Yitzchok and Ein Yitzchok.

מכתב אוטוגרפי שכתב ר’ יצחק אלחנן ספקטור לר’ שמואל יוסף פין מווילנא, ככל הנראה בנוגע למצב בעיר קליבנאו. כפי המסתבר, קדושת בית הכנסת בעיר לא נשמרה כראוי בעקבות פעולותיהם של המקלים בשמירת התורה והמצוות. ר’ יצחק אלחנן מבקש מהר’ פין להפעיל את קשריו במקום כדי למגר את התופעה.
ר’ יצחק אלחנן ספקטור (תקע”ז- תרנ”ו, 1817-1896), היה מגדולי הרבנים בתקופתו. נודע בגאונותו בתורה, שקדנותו וצדקותו. היווה את הסמכות התורנית העליונה בדורו והנהיג את יהדות ליטא ורוסיה בחכמה ובתבונה במשך שנים ארוכות. כיהן ברבנות מאז תקצ”ז 1837 ובשנת תרכ”ד 1864 נתמנה לתפקיד הרב בקובנא. תשובות וחידושי התורה שלו יצאו לאור בספרים באר יצחק, נחל יצחק ועין יצחק.
