Long autograph letter by R. Zalman Sender Kahana-Schapiro to his cousin R. Chaim Ha’Levi Soloveitchik on the topic of “Issur Chal Al Issur” (see Chidushei Rav Zalman Sender Kodshim page 223; Chidushei Rabbeinu Chaim Ha’Levi on Krisus and Chidushei HaGrI”Z Ha’Levi on Krisus). He opens the letter by writing “I received your dear letter with great pleasure, your sweet Chidushim, even though they were few, quenched the thirst of my soul to hear your pleasant words”.
While the Torah portion of this letter is published, an unpublished section of the letter includes details of the Beis Halevy’s nomination as Rav of Brisk. R. Zalman Sender writes that he interceded on behalf of the Beis HaLevy with those who were opposed to the nomination.
R. Zalman Sender Kahana-Schapiro (1851-1923), was a close talmid of the Beis HaLevy and studied together with his cousin R. Chaim Brisker when they were both learning in Slutzk. He was one of the leading Rabbonim in Lithuania, serving as Rav in Aletsch, Kobrin and Krinik. His son was the famed D’var Avrohom of Kovno.

מכתב אוטוגרפי ארוך שכתב ר’ זלמן סנדר כהנא שפירא לבן דודו ר’ חיים הלוי סאלאוויצ’יק, בנושא “איסור חל על איסור” (ראה חידושי ר’ זלמן סנדר קודשים עמ’ 223; חידושי רבינו חיים הלוי על כריתות וחידושי הגרי”ז הלוי על כריתות). בתחילת המכתב הוא כותב “מכתבו היקר קבלתי לרוב עונג חידושים הנעימים אף כי מעטים היו הרוו במעט את צימאון נפשי לדבריו … ומתוקים לחכי “.
אמנם חידושי התורה שבמכתב זה כבר יצאו לאור, אולם במכתב זה מופיעים גם על פרטים אודות מינויו של הבית הלוי כרב העיר בריסק. ר’ זלמן סנדר כותב כי הוא התערב לטובת הבית הלוי כנגד המתנגדים למינוי.
ר’ זלמן סנדר כהנא שפירא (תרי”א-תרפ”ג, 1851-1923) היה תלמיד מקורב ל”בית הלוי” ולמד יחד עם בן דודו, ר’ חיים בריסקר, בעת לימודם בישיבה בסלוצק. הוא היה מגדולי הרבנים בליטא ושימש כרב באלטסק, קוברין וקריניק. ה”דבר אברהם” הנודע מקובנא היה בנו.
