R. Nosson Tzvi Finkel (1849-1927), was born in Reisen, Lithuania. He was orphaned at a young age and grew up in the home of his uncle in Vilna. A few years after his marriage to a granddaughter of R. Eliezer Gutman, the Rav of Kelm, R. Nosson Tzvi returned to Reisen. The Rav of Reisen R. Alexander Moshe Lapidos, gave him a letter to deliver to R. Simcha Zissel Ziv, the famed Alter of Kelm. In the letter R. Alexander Moshe requests that the Alter should take R. Nosson Tzvi under his wing. Subsequently, R. Nosson Tzvi developed into one of the Alter of Kelm’s closest talmidim.
In 1876, after briefly serving in the Ohr HaChaim Yeshiva in Slabodka, R. Nosson Tzvi established the famed Knesses Yisroel Yeshiva of Slabodka. Roshei Yeshiva included the great R. Itzele Ponevezher and R. Moshe Mordechai Epstein.
In 1892, with the closing of the Volozhin Yeshiva, Slabodka Yeshiva emerged as the pre-eminent Yeshiva in Lithuania. Many of the next generation’s Roshei Yeshiva and Rabbonim were among the Talmidim. Distinguished alumni include, R. Yeruchum Levovitz, R. Naftoli Tropp, R. Reuven Grozovsky, R. Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, R. Aaron Kotler, R. Tzvi Pesach Frank, R. Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg, R. Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman, R. Yaakov Kamenetzky, R. Yitzchok Hutner among many others. R. Shach is said to have stated that the survival of the “Yeshiva World” is due to the Slabodka Yeshiva. In 1924, R. Nosson Tzvi moved to chevron with a small group of Talmidim to establish the Chevron Yeshiva and he passed away a few years later.
R. Avrohom Kamenetzky related that he once asked his father R. Yaakov why there were no writings of the Alter of Slabodka, R. Yaakov replied that the Alter wished that after he passed on, no one should remember that there was ever an Alter of Slabodka. Indeed, letters by the Alter are extremely scarce.

ר’ נתן צבי פינקל (תר”ט- תרפ”ז, 1849-1927), נולד ברייסן שבליטא. התייתם בגיל צעיר וגדל בבית דודו בווילנא. שנים מספר לאחר נישואיו עם נכדת ר’ אליעזר גוטמן, הרב מקלם, חזר ר’ נתן צבי לרייזן. רבה של רייזן, ר’ אלכסנדר משה לפידות נתן לו מכתב להעביר לר’ שמחה זיו, הסבא הנודע מקלם. במכתב ביקש ר’ אלכסנדר משה מהסבא לקחת את ר’ נתן צבי תחת חסותו. אכן, ר’ נתן צבי הפך לאחד מתלמידיו המקורבים ביותר של הסבא מקלם.
בשנת תרנ”ב 1892, בעקבות סגירתה של ישיבת וואלוז’ין, הפכה ישיבת סלבודקא לישיבה הגדולה בסלבודקא, ורבים מראשי הישיבות והרבנים בדור הבא נמנו על תלמידיה. מבין בחירי הבוגרים נמנים: ר’ ירוחם ליבוביץ, ר’ נפתלי טרופ, ר’ ראובן גרוזובסקי, ר’ אליעזר יהודה פינקל, ר’ אהרון קוטלר, ר’ צבי פסח פראנק, ר’ יחיאל יעקב וינברג, ר’ יעקב יצחק רודרמן, ר’ יעקב קמינצקי, ר’ יצחק הוטנר ועוד רבים אחרים. ידוע בשם הרב כי עולם הישיבות ניצל בזכות ישיבת סלבודקא. בשנת תרפ”ד 1924, עלה ר’ נתן צבי עם קבוצה נבחרת מתלמידיו לחברון, כדי להקים בה את ישיבת חברון. נפטר כמה שנים לאחר מכן.
ר’ אברהם קמינצקי שחזר כי שאל פעם את אביו, ר’ יעקב, מדוע אין בנמצא כתבים מהסבא מסלבודקא, ר’ יעקב ענה כי הסבא רצה שאחר פטירתו, לא ייזכר עוד כי היה מעולם סבא מסלבודקא. אכן, מכתבים מהסבא מסלבודקא הינם נדירים ביותר.
