Long autograph letter by R. Zelig Reuven Bengis to R. Gurwitz of Melbourne, Australia requesting assistance for Rabbonim who escaped to Eretz Yisroel and were now left without a source of livelihood.

R. Zelig Reuven Bengis (1864-1953), was born in Shnipishok (near Vilna) and was known as a prodigy from a young age. At seventeen he went to learn in the Volozhin Yeshiva under the Netziv, who called him the “Living Shas”. While learning at Volozhin, his reputation quickly grew and he was known as a diligent and brilliant student. In 1892, he was appointed Rav of Bodki, Poland and in 1911 he became Rav of Kalvarija, Lithuania. In 1938, he emigrated to Eretz Yisroel where he served on the Beis Din of the Eidah HaCharedis until his passing. He authored the multi-volume Liflagos Reuven.
R. Isser Zalman Meltzer (1870-1953), studied in the Volozhin Yeshiva where he was renowned for his brilliance coupled with tremendous diligence. He served as Rosh Yeshiva in Slabodka and then as Rav and Rosh Yeshiva in Slutzk. In 1925, he emigrated to Yerusholayim, where he served as the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Eitz Chaim. Author of the Even Ha’Ozel on the RaMBaM.

מכתב אוטוגרפי ארוך שכתב ר’ זעליג ראובן בנגיס לרב גורביץ ממלבורן, אוסטרליה בו הוא מבקש סיוע לרבנים שנמלטו לארץ ישראל ונותרו כעת ללא מקור מחיה.
עם חתימה נוספת של ר’ איסר זלמן מלצר.
ר’ זעליג ראובן בענגיס, (תרכ”ד – תשי”ג, 1864-1953), נולד בשניפישוק (על יד ווילנא) והתפרסם כעילוי כבר מגיל צעיר. בגיל שבע עשרה החל ללמוד בישיבת וואלוז’ין אצל הנצי”ב, שכינה אותו “הש”ס החי”. בעודו לומד בוואלוז’ין, יצא שמו במהירות והוא התפרסם כתלמיד פיקח ומתמיד במיוחד. בשנת תרנ”ד (1892), נתמנה לרבה של בודקי, פולין, ובתרע”א (1911) היה לרבה של קלבריה, ליטא. בתרצ”ח (1938) עלה לארץ ישראל, שם שימש בבית הדין של העדה החרדית עד פטירתו. מחבר הספר רב הכרכים לפלגות ראובן.
ר’ איסר זלמן מלצר, (תר”ל – תשי”ג, 1870-1953), למד בישיבת וואלוז’ין, שם התפרסם בזכות מוחו החריף והתמדתו ושקדנותו המופלאים. הוא כיהן כראש ישיבת סלבודקא ואח”כ שימש כרב וכראש ישיבה בסלוצק. בשנת תרפ”ה (1925), עלה לירושלים, שם שימש כראש ישיבת עץ חיים. חיבר את פירוש אבן האזל על הרמב”ם.
