The Jewish community in Tunis is among the oldest extant Jewish communities in the World. Following the establishment of the state of Israel which provoked a widespread anti-Zionist reaction, Jews left Tunisia en masse. As of 2011, 700 Jews remained in Tunis and 1,000 on the adjacent island of Djerba.
