Commentary on the Zohar based on Kabbalah and Chassidus, by the famed R. Yitzchok Issac Safrin of Komarna.
The Zohar Chai is an original and profound commentary to the Zohar, based on the fundamental teachings of the Arizal and the Baal Shem Tov. In this sefer, the author interweaves and combines Kabbalah and Chassidus. Unlike his other seforim which were printed in his lifetime, this work was printed after his passing by his son R. Eliezer Tzvi (Damesek Eliezer). The first volume was published during the year of mourning and includes a lengthy introduction by his son, extolling the greatness of his father.
One of the stories he relates is that after his father authored the first four pages of this commentary, he was approached with a request that he daven for a deathly ill person. His father, who saw through his Divine Inspiration that the sick person required much Heavenly mercy to recover, told the messenger: “I have no way of helping him, but I do possess four pages which I wrote on the Zohar……, go tell this sick person that I am giving these novella on the Zohar to him as a complete gift… in this merit… perhaps he will be healed he will live for many years”. The messenger did as he was told and the invalid was healed.
Further in the introduction, he relates how the Ba’al Shem Tov appeared to his father in a dream and encouraged him to continue writing this sefer, which he completed just several weeks prior to his passing. In the conclusion at the end of the final volume, his son relates that on two occasions before his passing his father made him promise to publish the Zohar Chai commentary, “and I rejoice that I have honored my pledge and fulfilled the words of my father”.
R. Yitzchok Issac Yehuda Yechiel Safrin of Komarna (1806-1874), was a talmid of his uncle R. Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichoiv. He was renowned as a great Tzaddik and a tremendous Talmid Chochom. A prolific author, he wrote many seforim on various different Torah subjects, all of which are extremely highly regarded.

פרוש לזוהר על פי קבלה וחסידות, מאת הגה”ק ר’ יצחק אייזיק ספרין מקומרנה.
ספר זוהר חי הוא פירוש עמוק על הזהר הקדוש, בנוי על יסודות תורת האריז”ל ועל יסודות תורת הבעש”ט. המחבר משלב וממזג את הקבלה עם החסידות. בשונה משאר חיבוריו שנדפסו בחייו, חיבורו זה נדפס לאחר פטירתו, על ידי בנו האדמו”ר רבי אליעזר צבי, בעל “דמשק אליעזר”. הכרך הראשון נדפס בשנת האבל, ובתחילתו נדפסה הקדמה ארוכה ומופלאה מאת בנו ה”דמשק אליעזר”. בהקדמה מספר בנו על מדרגותיו המופלאות של אביו בתורה ובעבודת ה’, ומספר על גילויי רוח הקודש ועל מופתים שמימיים שראה בעיניו אצל אביו הקדוש.
בין היתר מספר בנו שלאחר שכתב אביו את ארבעת הדפים הראשונים של פירושו, נכנס אל אביו מישהו שביקש ממנו שיתפלל על חולה מסוכן. אביו שראה ברוח קודשו שאותו חולה זקוק לרחמי שמים מרובים, אמר לאותו אחד: “אין לי שום דרך לעזור לו, אלא יש תחת ידי ארבעה דפין שכתבתי על הזוהר, לך ואמור להחולה הזה שאני נותן לו במתנה גמורה חדושים של הזוהר… ובזכות זה אפשר יכריע הכף זכות ויחיה לאורך ימים ושנים. וכך עשה האיש הזה, ומיד כשאמר האיש הזה להחולה דבורים הללו, התחיל תיכף להזיע, ונתרפא”. עוד מסופר בהמשך ההקדמה, שארבעת הדפים הראשונים מהפירוש היו על שתי השורות הראשונות של הקדמת הזהר. דפים אלו נכתבו בקיץ תרי”ז, ומאז עשה הפסקה של עשר שנים מכתיבת הפירוש. בערך בשנת תרכ”ז “ראה בחלום הבעש”ט זצוקלה”ה, והסכים עמו שיתחיל לכתוב פירוש על הזוהר… ותיכף ומיד ביום המחרת התחיל לכתוב”. את פירושו סיים לכתוב מספר שבועות לפני פטירתו. בסיום הספר שבסוף הספר כותב בנו המו”ל, שאביו השביעו פעמיים בתקיעת כף קודם פטירתו “שאדפוס פרושו זהר חי הזה עד גמירא…….. ושמחתי במה שגמרתי אמונתי שלי וקיימתי דברי אאמו”ר זלה”ה”
ר’ יצחק אייזיק יהודה יחיאל ספרין מקומרנה (תקס”ו- תרל”ד, 1806-1874), היה תלמיד של דודו ר’ צבי הירש מז’ידיטשוב. התפרסם בצדקותו הגדולה ונודע כתלמיד חכם מופלג. חיבר ספרים רבים במכמני התורה השונים, וכולם התקבלו בהערכה עצומה.
