R. Samuel David Luzzato, or Shadal, (1800-1865) of Padua was a well-known Italian scholar, poet and author. Although he was a traditionalist and maintained a firm belief in revelation, treating the text of the Torah with divine regard, he occasionally allowed himself to depart from the long-established phrasing of the words as reflected in the Mesorah and the Talmud.
