R. Yitzchak Bar Sheshes (1126-1208), was a student of the Ra”N, R. Peretz Cohen, R. Chasdai Karshkash and was one of the great later Rishonim of Spain. He served in many great cities, most notably Algeria. He received Halachic queries from far and wide. His responsa are quoted extensively by R. Yosef Karo (Bais Yosef) and as such greatly influenced practical Halacha.
R. Yisroel Lipschitz (1782–1860), was born into a distinguished rabbinical family – his father was R. Gedalia Lipschitz, author of Regel Yeshara, and his grandfather was R. Yisroel Lipchitz, Rav of Cleves. He served as Rav, first in Dessau and then in Danzig. Famed for his outstanding scholarship, he was a prolific author who wrote many important works. His best known work is Tiferes Yisroel, already a classic in its author’s lifetime, which is often considered to be one of the clearest and most useful commentaries on the Mishna. Additionally, he was renowned as a great Tzaddik who led an ascetic lifestyle, frequently fasting while studying and praying incessantly.
A total of 12 glosses, two of them substantial and one signed “Yisroel Lipchitz”. Hitherto unknown, these annotations present a glorious addition to the world of Torah scholarship.

ר’ יצחק בן ר’ ששת (פ”ו-קס”ח 1326-1408) נולד בוולנסיה. הוא למד בברצלונה בישיבה הגדולה של רבינו ניסים (ר”ן). היה אחד מאחרוני הראשונים וקיבל שאלות הלכתיות ממרחק רב. השו”ת שלו מצוטט בהרחבה על ידי ר’ יוסף קארו (בית יוסף), ובכך השפיע על ההלכה המעשית.
ר’ ישראל ליפשיץ (תקמ”ב-תר”כ 1782-1860) נולד למשפחה רבנית חשובה. אביו היה ר’ גדליה ליפשיץ, בעל “רגל ישרה” וסבו היה ר’ ישראל ליפשיץ, רבה של קליווא. הוא כיהן כרב, תחילה בדסאו ולאחר מכן בדנציג. נודע בלמדנותו המופלגת והיה סופר רב פעלים שחיבר כמה ספרים חשובים. ספרו המפורסם ביותר, “תפארת ישראל” על משניות, הפך לספר יסוד כבר בחייו ונחשב לאחד הפירושים הברורים והשימושיים ביותר על המשנה. בנוסף, היה נודע כצדיק עצום שחיי חיי פרישות עם הרבה צומות בעודו לומד ומתפלל ללא הפסקה.
