The early Spanish Kabbalist R. Yoseph ben Avrohom Gikatilla (1248-c.1325), was a Talmid of the renowned Kabbalist R. Avrohom Abulafia. For centuries, Shaarei Orah has been widely accepted as an introduction to the learning of Kabbalah and the systematic presentation of the Sefiros and their code names. It is said that the Arizal commented that the sefer Shaarei Orah is the “key” to the correct understanding of the wisdom of Kabbalah.
The Mantua edition was printed the same year hence it is unclear which of the two, is the first edition.

ר’ יוסף בן אברהם גיקטילה, מקובל ספרדי קדום (ה”א ח’ 1248- סביבות פ”ה 1325), היה תלמיד של המקובל הנודע ר’ אברהם אבולעפיה. במשך דורות היה הספר שערי אורה מקובל ברבים כספר מקדים ללימוד המוסר, ולשיטת הצגת הספירות וכינויים. ידוע בשם האריז”ל כי הספר שערי אורה הינו “מפתח” להבנה נכונה של חכמת הקבלה.
מהדורת מנטובה נדפסה באותה שנה ועל כן לא ניתן לקבוע איזו מהן היא המהדורה הראשונה.
