Manuscript on Maseches Bava Basra handwritten by R. Chaim Dovid Nosson Stern, the only son of the renowned Gaon of Shavel, R. Yosef Zechariah Stern. With many handwritten glosses by R. Yosef Zechariah Stern. This manuscript has never been published.
Tragically, R. Chaim Dovid Nosson, who was an exceptional Talmid Chochom passed away, as a young man in the lifetime of his father.
R. Yosef Zechariah Stern (1839-1904), was one of the leading rabbinical leaders of his generation and author of many highly acclaimed works. His seforim, which encompass a wide spectrum of Torah subjects, are renowned for their great erudition and reveal some of the breadth of his encyclopedic knowledge. Additionally, his opinion on complex halachic issues was much sought after, and many of his responsa are printed in his multi-volume Zecher Yehosef.
In his first published work Zecher Yehosef on the Shas, which was published when R. Yosef Zechariah was 20 years old, R. Yaakov Gesundheit of Warsaw writes in his approbation, “HaRav Hama’or Ha’Gaon Ha’Gadol Ha’Charif U’Baki Ha’Mefursam R. Yosef Zecharia Stern of Lita came before me and showed me his manuscript… and I stood there astonished and trembling at the extent of his incisive encyclopedic knowledge of Talmud Bavli, Yerushalmi, Tosefta, with all the Tshuvos, Poskim and Meforshim….”

כתב יד על מסכת בבא בתרא בכתב ידו של ר’ חיים דוד נתן שטרן, בנו יחידו של הגאון הנודע משאוול, ר’ יוסף זכריה שטרן. עם הערות רבות בכתב ידו של ר’ יוסף זכריה שטרן. כתב זה מעולם לא נדפס.
באופן טראגי, נפטר הר’ חיים דוד נתן, שהיה תלמיד חכם עצום, בגיל צעיר, עוד בחיי אביו.
ר’ יוסף זכריה שטרן, (תקצ”ט – תרס”ד, 1839-1904), היה ממנהיגיה הרבניים הגדולים ביותר של דורו, וחיבוריו הרבים זכו לשבחים גדולים. ספריו מקיפים מגוון רחב של נושאים תורניים, ידועים בבקיאותם הגדולה ומעידים על ידע אנציקלופדי נרחב.
נוסף על כך, דעתו בנושאים הלכתיים מורכבים הייתה מאוד מבוקשת, ורבות מתשובותיו נדפסו בספרו רב הכרכים זכר יהוסף.
חיבורו הראשון “זכר יהוסף על הש”ס” נדפס בהיותו בן 20 שנה בלבד. ר’ יוסף גזונדהייט כותב בהסכמתו לספר בא לפני הרב המאור הגאון הגדול החריף ובקי סוע”ה …..והראה לי ספרו …. ועמדתי מרעיד ומשתומם על חריפותו ובקיאתו בים התלמוד בבלי וירושלמי תוספתא עם כל הפוסקים ותשובות מפרשים קדמאי ובתראי…….
