One of the earliest and most fundamental halachic works, the Sefer Halachos Gedolos was written during the period of the Gaonim. The identity of author, (known as the Ba’al Halachos Gedolos [BaHaG]) is a matter of dispute between the Rishonim who cite him extensively. Some attribute it to R. Yehudai Gaon and others to R. Shimon Keira. On the title page of this sefer R. Moshe M’Couci (S’MAG) is quoted ascribing it to R. Yehudai Gaon. Following the title page, is an introduction regarding the identity of the author.

ספר הלכות גדולות נכתב בתקופת הגאונים והינו אחד החיבורים ההלכתיים הקדומים והיסודיים ביותר. זהות המחבר (שנודע בכינויו “בעל הלכות גדולות” [בה”ג]) שנויה במחלוקת בין הראשונים המצטטים את דבריו בהרחבה. יש שמייחסים את החיבור לר’ יהודאי גאון ואחרים מייחסים אותו לר’ שמעון קירא. בעמוד השער של הספר מצוטט ר’ משה מקוצי (סמ”ג), המייחס אותו לר’ יהודאי גאון. לאחר עמוד השער מופיעה הקדמה אודות זהות המחבר.
