Autograph letter by R. Joseph Ber Soloveitchik to R. Eliezer Silver. R. Soloveitchik writes that he received R. Eliezer’s letter but fell ill and was therefore unable to respond immediately. Whilst unwell he nevertheless delivered the “Yahrzeit” shiur in memory of his father (Rav Moshe Soloveitchik) after which he had a relapse, and he hopes that the delay in response is understood. He then invites R. Silver to discuss the issue in depth the next time the latter visits New York.
It is evident from this letter, the Rav’s dedication to the famed “Yahrzeit Shiur”, (which was a highly anticipated yearly highlight, attended by Rabbonim, Roshei Yeshiva and students far and wide). The Shiurim were then published under the title Shiurim L’Zecher Abba Mori.

מכתב אוטוגרפי מאת ר’ יוסף בער סולוביצ’יק אל ר’ אליעזר סילבר. הרב סולוביציק כותב שהוא קיבל את מכתבו של הרב סילבר, אולם כיון שנפל למשכב לא יכל להשיב מיד. למרות חוליו, הוא אמר את ה”יארצייט שיעור” אותו מסר לזכר אביו (ר’ משה סולוביצ’יק) ואשר מיד לאחריה הייתה נסיגה במצבו הבריאותי. הוא כותב שהוא מקווה שהאיחור בתגובה התקבל ונסלח, ומזמין את הרב סילבר לדיון מעמיק בנושא בפעם הבאה שיבקר בניו יורק.
מהמכתב ניכרת מסירותו הרבה של הרב ל”יארצייט שיעור”, (אשר הייתה גולת הכותרת השנתית שהכל ציפו לה, ואליה נהרו רבנים, ראשי ישיבות, ותלמידים מקרוב ומרחוק). השיעורים הודפסו והתפרסמו תחת השם “שיעורים לזכר אבא מארי”.
