Long letter (only signed) by R. Dovid Friedman (Karliner) to R. Shmuel Salant regarding the financial support of the old Yishuv. With mention of a large Rabbinic gathering that took place in Vilna to discuss the dire situation of the Yishuv.
R. Dovid Friedman (1828-1915), known as R. Dovid Karliner, was born in Biala, to a rabbinical family. From a very young age he was known as an extraordinary genius who studied with remarkable diligence, and became famous throughout the region as an outstanding young Talmid Chochom. In 1846 he married the daughter of the distinguished philanthropist R. Shmaryahu Luria, who supported him for twenty years so he could study undisturbed. Following his father in law’s passing in 1866, he was compelled to accept the position as Rav of Karlin, and thus became known as R. Dovid Karliner. He served in that capacity for fifty years and was widely considered to be one of the greatest Torah scholars of his era, held in enormous esteem by his rabbinical cotemporaries as well as by the general public. See Ohalei Shem (p. 172-174), that R. Chaim Soloveitchik and R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky both referred to him as the “Gadol Ha’Dor” and “Yochid B’Doreinu”.

מכתב ארוך (רק חתימה) בידי ר’ דוד פרידמן (קרלינער) לר’ שמואל סלנט, בעניין הסיוע הכלכלי ליישוב הישן. עם ציון אסיפת רבנים גדולה שהתקיימה בווילנא כדי לדון במצבו הנואש של היישוב.
ר’ דוד פרידמן (תקפ”ח-תרע”ח, 1828-1915), המכונה ר’ דוד קרלינער, נולד בביאלע למשפחה מכובדת. מגיל צעיר כבר נודע כגאון מופלג שלמד בשקידה מופלאה והתפרסם בכל האזור כתלמיד חכם עצום. בשנת תר”ו (1846) נישא לבת הנדיב הנכבד ר’ שמריהו לוריא שהחזיק אותו על שולחנו במשך 20 שנה כדי שיוכל ללמוד בפניות ובשלוה. עם פטירת חותנו בתרכ”ו (1866), נאלץ לקבל עליו את משרת הרב בקרלין, ומכאן שמו – ר’ דוד קרלינר. בתפקיד זה שימש במשך 50 שנים ונחשב לאחד מתלמידי החכמים הגדולים ביותר בתקופתו. הוא זכה להערכה רבה מצד חבריו הרבנים כמו גם מהמון העם. ראה ספר אוהלי שם (עמ’ 172-174), שר’ חיים סולוביצ’יק ור’ חיים עוזר גרוז’ינסקי מכנים אותו “גדול הדור” ו”יחיד בדורנו”.
