Historic autograph letter by R. Avrohom Duber Kahana Schapira to Rabbi Dr. Shipper of Karlsruhe. He writes that he’s including with the letter a copy of his new Sefer D’var Avrohom and that the cost of printing the Sefer was exorbitant, as he spared no cost to ensure that it should be without any errors and enjoyable to learn from. He then extolls the importance of his Sefer, writing that it is being appreciated by the great Rabbonim of the region. However, since there has been a sharp decline in the number of Talmidei Chachomim, the demand for the Sefer is less than he anticipated and he is forced to request financial assistance outside Russia. He concludes that specifically at times where scholarship was neglected, the need to support Torah scholars is even greater.
R. Avrahom Duber Kahana Schapira (1870-1943), was the last Rav of Kovno and one of the leading Talmidei Chachomim and Rabbinical leaders in Lithuania during the pre-WWII era. When the war broke out in 1939, he was in Switzerland for health reasons. His son, who was living in the United States, sent him a telegram to join him in the U.S. until after the war. His father, upon receiving the telegram, showed it to one of his close friends stating emphatically, “The captain is the last to abandon his sinking ship, not the first. At this time of danger, my place is with the people of my city. I am going to Kovno.” Indeed, he continued to lead and inspire his community until he passed away in the Kovno ghetto, and was perhaps the only Rav given a funeral under the watch of the Nazi occupiers.

מכתב היסטורי אוטוגרפי מר’ אברהם דובער כהנא שפירא לרב ד”ר שיפער מקהילת קרלסרוהע. הוא כותב שהוא מצרף עותק של ספרו החדש “דבר אברהם” ושהוצאות הדפוס של הספר היו גבוהות במיוחד משום שהוא לא חסך בהוצאות כדי לוודא שהספר יצא לאור ללא טעויות ויהיה מענג ללימוד. לאחר מכן הוא מרחיב בשבחו של הספר וכותב שגדולי רבני המחוז נהנים ללמוד בו. אולם, בגלל הירידה החדה במספר תלמידי החכמים, הדרישה לספר נמוכה משציפה ולכן הוא מוכרח לחפש תמיכה כלכלית מחוץ לגבולות רוסיה. הוא כותב לסיום שדווקא בתקופה שלימוד התורה נמצא בשפל, חשוב עוד יותר לתמוך בלומדי תורה.
ר’ אברהם דובער כהנא שפירא תר”ל- תש”ג (1870-1943), היה הרב האחרון בקובנא, ומגדולי הרבנים והמנהיגים בליטא בתקופה שלפני השואה. כשפרצה המלחמה בתרצ”ט (1939), שהה אז בשוויץ לצרכי בריאותו. בנו, שהתגורר בארצות הברית, שלח לו מברק שיבוא אליו לארה”ב עד סיום המלחמה. עם קבלת המברק, הראה אותו האב לאחד מידידיו הקרובים וקבע נחרצות, “הקברניט הוא האחרון שנוטש את ספינתו הטובעת, לא הראשון. בשעת סכנה זו מקומי עם אנשי עירי. אני הולך לקובנה”. ואכן, המשיך להנהיג את קהילתו עד שנפטר בגטו קובנה, ויתכן שהיה הרב היחיד שהלווייתו התקיימה תחת עיני הכובשים הנאצים.
