Autograph letter of condolences by R. Meir Simcha Cohen of Dvinsk. Beginning with strong words of faith regarding the divine plan which is beyond human comprehension. He then warmly encourages the mourner to “embolden and be strong” despite the trying tragedy, and concludes with empathetic wishes and blessings. Aside from the rarity of correspondence from R. Meir Simcha, this letter provides a glimpse of the benevolence and compassion this Torah genius was famous for.
R. Meir Simcha Cohen (1843-1926) was born in Butrimonys, Lithuania and after his marriage he settled in Bialystok where he studied in the local shul for many years developing into a phenomenal Talmid Chochom. He then accepted an invitation to be the Rav of the Misnagdim of the city of Dvinsk alongside R. Yosef Rosen (Rogatchover Gaon), who was the Rav of the Chasidim. Author of Ohr Samayach on the RaMBaM and Meshech Chochmah on the weekly Torah portions which were both received with great acclaim and remain classics of Torah scholarship.

מכתב תנחומים אוטוגרפי מאת ר’ מאיר שמחה כהן מדווינסק. המכתב פותח בדברי אמונה איתנים באשר לתכנית האלוקית, שהינה מעל ומעבר להבנה האנושית. לאחר מכן, הוא מעודד את האבל ” להתחזק ולהתאמץ” למרות הטרגדיה הקשה, ומסיים באיחולים וברכות מקרב לב. מלבד נדירות התכתובת מאת ר’ מאיר שמחה, מכתב זה מעניק הצצה לטוב לבו וחמלתו המפורסמים של גאון תורני זה.
ר’ מאיר שמחה הכהן (תר”ג-תרפ”ו 1843-1926) נולד בבוטרימוניס, ליטא. לאחר נישואיו הוא התיישב בביאליסטוק, שם למד בבית הכנסת המקומי במשך שנים רבות וצמח לתלמיד חכם בעל שיעור קומה. לאחר מכן הוא נענה להזמנה לכהן כרב המתנגדים בעיר דווינסק לצד ר’ יוסף רוזן (הגאון מרוגצ’וב) שהיה רב החסידים במקום. חיבר את הספר “אור שמח” על הרמב”ם ו”משך חכמה” על פרשות השבוע. שני הספרים התקבלו באהבה רבה, והן מהוות ספרי מופת תורניים עד ימינו.
