Handwritten letter (unsigned), by R. Yosef Shalom Eliyashiv to his mechutan, R. Yisroel Yaakov Kanievsky (The Steipler Gaon). Dated 1966, R. Eliyashiv commences with unusually warm honorifics, including an acronym for “Tzaddik Yesod Olam”. He writes that he received the Steipler’s sefer, a volume of Kehilas Yaakov, and continues with some comments and warm brochos for continued success.
R. Yosef Shalom Eliyashiv (1910-2012), was born in Siauliai, Lithuania and at the age of 12 emigrated to Eretz Yisroel where he spent his entire life studying with great diligence. He was the paramount leader of the generation, both in Halachic and communal matters. R. Eliyashiv’s eldest daughter, was married to R. Chaim Kanievsky, making him the Steipler’s mechutan. These two Torah giants held in each other in enormous regard, with each one respecting the other as the greatest Torah leader of the generation.

מכתב בכתב יד (לא חתום) מתוארך לשנת תשכ”ו (1966) מאת ר’ יוסף שלום אלישיב אל מחותנו, ר’ ישראל יעקב קנייבסקי (הסטייפלער). הרב אלישיב פותח בתארי כבוד יוצאי דופן בחמימותם, כולל ראשי התיבות של “צדיק יסוד עולם”. הוא מאשר שקיבל את ספרו של הסטייפלער, כרך של “קהילות יעקב”, וממשיך במספר הערות וברכות חמות להמשך הצלחה.
ר’ יוסף שלום אלישיב (תר”ע-תשע”ב 1910-2012) נולד בשאולאי, ליטא ובגיל 12 עלה לארץ ישראל, שם השקיע את כל חייו בלימוד התורה במסירות נפלאה. היה מנהיג הדור בנושאים הלכתיים וקהילתיים כאחד. בתו הבכורה של הרב אלישיב נישאה לר’ חיים קנייבסקי וכך נעשה הסטייפלער למחותנו. שני ענקי תורה אלו רחשו זה לזה הערכה עצומה, כאשר כל אחד ראה ברעהו את גדול התורה בדורו.
