A Hebrew ode written in honor of Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore, upon their arrival to Eretz Yisroel, by Yaakov Saphir.
Saphir relates of the munificence of Sir Moses Montefiore and Gershon Kursheedt for utilizing the funds provided by the American Jewish philanthropist Judah Touro to build a hospital in Jerusalem (see pp.12-15). Touro was born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1775 and died in New Orleans in 1854. He left a legacy of $60,000 to support the indigent residents of Jerusalem, the funds were to be distributed at the discretion of Sir Moses Montefiore and Gershon Kursheedt who were named as trustees.
Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885), was a Jewish English financier and banker, advocate of social reform and philanthropist who served as Sheriff of London. He devoted most of his life to assisting Jewish communities worldwide, particularly the Jews of the Holy Land to whom he donated large sums of money to promote health, education and industry. Amongst his many noble endeavors was the financing of a printing press in Yerusholayim as a means of providing a livelihood for the impoverished residents of the old Yishuv. His passing in 1885 was mourned by Jews worldwide.

שיר שכתב יעקב ספיר לכבודם של השר מוזס וליידי ג’ודית מונטיפיורי, לרגל בואם לארץ ישראל.
ספיר מספר על מסירותם של השר משה מונטפיורי וגרשון קורשייד לניצול הכספים שהעניק הפילנתרופ היהודי האמריקני יהודה טורו לבניית בית חולים בירושלים (ראו עמוד 12-15). טורו נולד בניופורט, רוד איילנד בשנת תקל”ה (1775) ונפטר בניו אורלינס בשנת תרי”ד (1854). הוא הותיר אחריו סכום של 60,000$ כדי לתמוך בתושבי ירושלים העניים. הכספים אמורים היו להתחלק לפי שיקול דעתם של השר מוזס מונטפיורי וגרשון קורשייד שכונו ה”נאמנים”.
השר משה מונטפיורי (תקמ”ד-תרמ”ה 1784-1885) היה בעל הון ובנקאי יהודי אנגלי, תומך ברפורמה חברתית, פילנתרופ ושר בלונדון. את מרבית שנות חייו הקדיש לסיוע לקהילות יהודיות ברחבי העולם ובפרט ליהודי ארץ הקודש, להם תרם סכומי כסף נכבדים לקידום תעשייה, חינוך ובריאות. בין פועליו הנדיבים הוא מימן בית דפוס בירושלים כאמצעי פרנסה לתושבי היישוב הישן העניים. פטירתו בשנת תרמ”ה (1885) היוותה צער ואבל ליהודים ברחבי העולם.
