R. Shmuel (Schmelke) Ha’Levy Horwitz of Nikolsburg (1726-1778), was the oldest son of R. Tzvi Hirsch of Chortkov who was able to trace his Yichus to Shmuel Ha’Navi. In their youth, he and his brother R. Pinchos (the Ba’al Haflo’ah) travelled to Mezritch and became close Chassidim of R. Dov Ber of Mezritch (Mezritcher Maggid). World famous as a tremendous Talmid Chochom and Tzaddik, he served as Rov in Shinniva, and in 1773 was appointed as Rov of Nikolsburg. His talmidim include R. Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, the Chozeh of Lublin, R. Menachem Mendel of Rimanov, R. Mordechai Banet, R. Moshe Leib of Sassov and R. Baruch of Kaliv who was his son-in-law.
Variant edition! According to Stefansky and Vinograd the first section ends on page 23 after Likutei Ha’Shas on Kesubos. This copy continues with another 5 pages of novella on Kidushin as well as a letter written by the Haflo’ah.

ר’ שמואל (שמעלקע) הלוי הורוויץ מניקלשבורג (תס”ו-תקל”ח 1726-1778) היה בנו הבכור של ר’ צבי הירש מצ’ורטקוב, שהיה מיוחס לשמואל הנביא. הוא ואחיו ר’ פנחס (בעל ה’הפלאה’) נסעו בצעירותם למעזריץ’ ונעשו חסידים מקורבים לר’ דוב בער ממעזריץ’ (המגיד ממעזריץ’). התפרסם ברחבי העולם כתלמיד חכם וצדיק עצום. הוא שימש כרב בשיניווא ובשנת תקל”ג (1773) התמנה לרבה של ניקלשבורג. בין תלמידיו נמנים ר’ לוי יצחק מברדיטשוב, החוזה מלובלין, ר’ מנחם מנדל מרימנוב, ר’ מרדכי בנט, ר’ משה לייב מסאסוב וחתנו ר’ ברוך מקאליב.
