The illustrations reflect Jewish life in America in the 1920’s in various places, e.g. in the illustration portraying the four sons, the wise son is unusually shown as a clean shaven Talmudic scholar and the wicked son as a bare headed boxer (a sport that was popular in that era with unaffiliated Jewish youth).
