The seforim of the Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh were received to almost unprecedented acclaim, particularly among Chassidim and Mekubolim. The CHIDA in Shem HaGedolim writes of the great esteem that the Ba’al Shem Tov had for the Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh. In a famous instance, R. Chaim Halberstam (Divrei Chaim) wrote, that an individual who does not believe that the Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh was written with Ruach Ha’Kodesh is to be considered a heretic. As is well known, Seforim printed by the Schapiro family press were exceptionally favored by many of the great Chassidic Rebbes and in turn their followers.
R. Chaim Ibn Attar (1696-1743), was born in Morocco and was one of its most prominent Rabbonim. In 1733, he decided to emigrate to Eretz Yisroel. En route, he stopped in Livorno where the rich members of the community pleaded for him to stay and established a Yeshiva for him. In 1742, he arrived in Yerusholayim where he became Rav of the Knesses Yisroel Shul. His most famous student was R. Chaim Dovid Azulai (CHIDA). He is buried on Har Ha’Zesim and there are countless accounts of miraculous divine assistance, after praying at his Kever.

A complete set of these Chumashim is highly unusual, Vinograd records never having seen a complete set.

ספרי האור החיים הקדוש התקבלו בהתלהבות חסרת תקדים, בפרט בקרב החסידים והמקובלים. החיד”א מתאר ב”שם הגדולים” את ההערכה העצומה שרחש הבעל שם טוב להאור החיים הקדוש. מפורסם הסיפור על ר’ חיים הלברשטם (“דברי חיים”) שכתב שמי שאינו מאמין שהאור החיים הקדוש נכתב ברוח הקודש נחשב לכופר. כידוע, ספרים שיצאו לאור בדפוס משפחת שפירא היו חביבים ביותר על רבים מגדולי האדמו”רים.
ר’ חיים אבן עטר (תנ”ו-תק”ג 1696-1743) נולד במרוקו והיה אחד מגדולי רבניה. בשנת תצ”ג (1733) הוא החליט לעלות לארץ ישראל. כאשר הוא עצר בליוורנו בדרך, עשירי הקהילה התחננו אליו להישאר והקימו לו ישיבה. בשנת תק”ב (1742) הוא הגיע לירושלים ונעשה רב בבית הכנסת כנסת ישראל. תלמידו המפורסם ביותר היה ר’ חיים דוד אזולאי (חיד”א). הוא קבור בהר הזיתים וישנם אינספור סיפורים על ישועות שאירעו לאחר תפילה על קברו.
