Classic sefer authored by R. Yosef Babad as a commentary to Sefer Ha’Chinuch. Published anonymously, it quickly became enormously popular and remains one of the most frequently learned Sifrei Achronim.
R. Yosef Babad (1801-1874), was born into a rabbinical family and was renowned from a young age as a brilliant Talmid Chochom. He was a student of R. Shimon of Yaroslov, R. Dovid of Zavlotov (later his father-in-law) and particularly of R. Naftali of Ropchitz, whom he referred to as his Rebbe. He subsequently married to the daughter of R. Aryeh Leibish Halberstam of Tarnigrod, and for a while studied with his brother-in-law, R. Chaim Halberstam of Tzanz (the Divrei Chaim). He served as Rav in various communities, most notably Tarnapol, and was thus known as the Tarnapoler Rav. Held in the greatest esteem by the great Torah leaders, his magnum opus Minchas Chinuch received almost unprecedented acclaim.
The title page of this first edition of the Minchas Chinuch, which was published anonymously during the lifetime of author, states: “Written by one of the holy Torah geniuses of our times, who omitted his name owing to his great humility… published through the efforts of R. Reuven Cohen Rappaport”. Only in the second edition (Lemberg 1889), 15 years after the author’s death, was his identity revealed by the publisher.

פירוש על ספר החינוך לרב יוסף באב”ד. הספר יצא לאור בעילום שם, אך עד מהרה זכה לאהדה רבה והפך לאחד מספרי האחרונים הנלמד ביותר.
הרב יוסף באב”ד (תקס”א-תרל”ד, 1801-1874) נולד למשפחה רבנית והוכר כעילוי עוד בימי חורפו. היה תלמידו של הרב שמעון מירוסלב, הרב דוד מזבלוטוב (שהיה לחמיו) ובפרט הרב נפתלי מרופשיץ, אותו כינה “הרבי”. היה נשוי לבתו של הרב אריה לייביש הלברשטאם מטרניגרוד, ובמשך תקופה מסוימת למד עם גיסו הרב חיים הלברשטאם מצאנז (‘דברי חיים’). הוא שימש כרב בקהילות שונות, בייחוד בטרנפול, וכך נודע כ”הרב מטרנפול”. ספרו “מנחת חינוך” זכה לתשבחות של גדולי ישראל ולהוקרה כמעט חסרת תקדים. עד היום נחשב כספר עיון חשוב ביותר.
בשער של המהדורה הראשונה לספר מנחת חינוך, אשר הודפס בעילום שם בחייו של המחבר, מופיעה השורה הבאה: “חובר ע”י אחד מגאוני התורה הקדושה שבדורנו, אשר העלים שמו מתוך רוב ענוה… יצא לאור בזכות מאמציו של הרב ראובן כהן רפפורט”. רק במהדורה השניה (למברג תרמ”ט, 1889), 15 שנה לאחר פטירתו של המחבר, נחשפה זהותו על ידי המוציא לאור.
