R. Levi Ibn Chaviv (1483-1545), was born in Spain shortly before the era of the Inquisition. As a young child he was forcibly baptized, however shortly afterwards he escaped together with his father to Salonika. There he developed into a great scholar and assisted his father in leading the community of Spanish exiles. In his later years he settled in Yerusholayim, where he was recognized as great halachic leader and was actively involved in opposing the proposed reinstatement of Semicha by the scholars of Tzefas.

ר’ לוי אבן חביב (רמ”ג-ש”ה 1483-1545) נולד בספרד זמן קצר לפני תקופת האינקוויזיציה. הוא הוטבל לנצרות בכפייה בתור ילד, אך זמן קצר לאחר מכן נמלט עם אביו לסלוניקה. שם הוא צמח לתלמיד חכם גדול ועמד לימין אביו בהנהגת קהילת הגולים מספרד. בשנותיו המאוחרות התיישב בירושלים, שם הוכר כמנהיג הלכתי דגול והיה מעורב בהתנגדות להחזרת הסמיכה הרבנית שהוצעה על ידי חכמי צפת.
