Ha’Rav Kook V’Kadur Regel. Yerushalayim 1930’s.
Addendum to the Kol Yisroel Periodical published under the auspices of R. Amrom Blau of the Neturei Karta. In the early 1930’s a great controversy arose in Yerushalayim with the members of Maccabi playing soccer matches on Shabbos, claiming that a certain Rav had ruled leniently on the matter. R. Kook wrote a halachic responsum in 1931, absolutely forbidding it, adding that Maccabi’s violation of Shabbos was damaging the very fabric of Jewish nationhood. Apparently in a different forum R. Kook had said that soccer per se is a positive thing. R. Kook’s opponents audaciously seized upon this statement, and often attempted to misinterpret it against him.

הרב קוק וכדור רגל. ירושלים, שנות התר”צ שנות ה-1930
נספח לכתב העת “קול ישראל” שיצא תחת חסותו של ר’ עמרם בלוי מנטורי קרתא. בשנות התר”צ (1930) המוקדמות התעורר פולמוס גדול בירושלים מול חברי קבוצת הכדורגל מכבי ששיחקה כדורגל בשבת בתואנה שרב מסוים התיר זאת. הרב קוק כתב תשובה הלכתית בשנת תרצ”א (1931) ובה הוא אוסר את העניין מכל וכל ומוסיף שחילול השבת של מכבי פוגע בעצמה ובשרה של הלאומיות היהודית. הרב קוק ציין, כנראה בפורום שונה, שכדורגל לכשעצמו הוא דבר חיובי. מתנגדיו של הרב קוק עטו בחוצפה על הצהרה זו, ופעמים רבות ניסו לפרש אותה באופן מעוות נגדו
