Chassidic commentary on Sefer Tehillim by R. Yisroel Hopstein, the legendary Kozhnitzer Maggid.
R. Yisroel Hopstein (1737-1815), was born to aged parents following a blessing they received from the Baal Shem Tov. He was known as an Illui, and initially learned under R. Schmelke of Nikolsburg, who later sent him to learn under the Mezritcher Maggid. Following the passing of the Mezritcher Maggid in 1772, he became a talmid of R. Elimelech of Lizhensk and was one of his most prominent disciples. In 1765, he was appointed as Maggid in Kozhnitz. He was leader of thousands of Chassidim, becoming one of the primary Chassidic leaders in Poland.
With the signature of R. Elozor Rokeach, Rav of Drohobycz, who writes that the sefer belonged to his father-in-law R. Yosef Alter Epstein of Magrov.
R. Yosef Alter Epstein (1835-1899), was one of the most distinguished poskim in Galicia. He was held in enormous esteem by many of the great Poskim of his era, including R. Shlomo Kluger, The Sho’el U’Maishiv and R. Yitzchok Schmelkes. He served as Dayan in Magrov and later as Rav of Ozheron. Author of sefer Ginzei Yosef (Munkacs 1895) which has many important approbations, all attesting to the author’s greatness.

פירוש חסידי על ספר תהלים לר’ ישראל הופשטיין, המגיד מקוזניץ.
ר’ ישראל הופשטיין (תצ”ז-תקע”ה 1737-1815) נולד להורים מבוגרים לאחר שהתברכו מפי הבעל שם טוב. נודע כעילוי, ולמד תחילה אצל ר’ שמעלקע מניקלשבורג עד ששלחו ללמוד אצל המגיד ממזריטש. לאחר פטירת המגיד ממזריטש בשנת תקל”ב (1772), הפך לתלמידו המובהק של ר’ אלימלך מליזנסק. משנת תקכ”ה (1765) שימש כמגיד בקוזניץ והנהיג “חצר” של אלפי חסידים. היה מגדולי אדמו”רי פולין.
עם חתימת ר’ אלעזר רוקח, הרב מדרוהוביץ’, שכותב שהספר היה שייך לחמיו, ר’ יוסף אלטער אפשטיין ממגרוב.
ר’ יוסף אלטער אפשטיין (תקצ”ה-תרנ”ט 1835-1899) היה מגדולי פוסקי גליציה. גדולי הפוסקים בדורו חלקו לו כבוד רב, מהם: ר’ שלמה קלוגר, בעל השואל ומשיב ור’ יצחק שמעלק’ס. שימש כדיין בעיר מגרוב ולאחר מכן כרבה של אוזרון. חיבר ספר “גנזי יוסף” (מוקנטש תרנ”ה 1895), שזכה להסכמות חשובות רבות המעידות על גדולת המחבר.
