Autograph letter by R. Yaakov Ettlinger. Written to the father of a bochur learning in his Yeshiva, concerning his son’s progress. Written during his tenure as Rov and Rosh Yeshiva in Manheim, this letter provides a rare intimate glimpse into one of the great Yeshivos of Germany.
R. Yaakov Ettlinger (1789-1872), was a talmid of R. Osher, son of the Sha’agas Aryeh in Karlsruhe.
In 1828, he was appointed Rov and Rosh Yeshiva in Manheim and in 1836, he was appointed Rov of the “AH’U communities” (Altona, Hamburg and Wandsbeck) where he established a prominent Yeshiva.
He was one of the most influential rabbinical figures of his era, known as a great disseminator of Torah, as well as one of the most vocal opponents of the Reform Movement.
Some of his most notable students were R, Shamshon Refoel Hirsch, R. Azriel Hildesheimer and R. Tzvi Binyomin Auerbach, among many others. He was a prolific author, writing various important seforim including the Oruch L’Ner, Bikurei Yaakov and Binyan Tzion (responsa), which are classics of Torah scholarship greatly beloved by Torah scholars.

מכתב אוטגרפי שכתב ר’ יעקב אטלינגר לאבא של תלמיד מישיבתו בעניין ההתקדמות של בנו. מכתב זה נכתב בתקופת כהונתו כרב וראש ישיבה במנהיים, ולכן הוא מספק הצצה נדירה מקרוב לאחת הישיבות הגדולות של גרמניה.
ר’ יעקב אטלינגר (תקמ”ט- תרל”ב, 1789-1872), היה תלמידו של ר’ אשר- בנו של השאגת אריה בקרלסרוהה.
בתקפ”ח (1828) נתמנה לרב וראש ישיבה במאנהיים, ובתקצ”ו (1836) מונה לרב על קהילות אה”ו (אלטונה, המבורג וונדסבק) שם גם ייסד ישיבה חשובה.
היה מהרבנים המשפיעים ביותר בתקופתו, ונודע כמפיץ תורה גדול, וכן גם אחד המתנגדים הגדולים ביותר לתנועה הרפורמית.
מבין תלמידיו הדגולים: ר’ שמשון רפאל הירש, ר’ עזריאל הילדיסהיימר, ר’ צבי בנימין אוירבך ועוד רבים אחרים. חיבר כמה ספרים חשובים שונים, ביניהם “ערוך לנר”, “ביכורי יעקב” ו”בניין ציון” (שו”ת), כולם חיבורים מיוחדים, אהובים מאוד על לומדי התורה.
