R. Ephraim Oshry (1914-2003), was born in Kupishuk, Lithuania and learned in the great Yeshivos of Kelm, Ponevezh and Slabodka. In 1934, he received Semicha from R. Avrohom Duber Kahana Shapiro and R. Leib Rubin of Wilkomir among others and served as a Rav in Slabodka. During The War, Rav Oshry stayed in the Kovno Ghetto and served as an assistant to the Kovno Rov. With the Kovno Rov ailing, many of the questions that arose were posed to R. Oshry, and his responsa, along with many by the Kovno Rav, were published after The War under the title Mi’mamakim.
This heartrending sefer is an example of dedication to Torah even in the most trying of times.

ר’ אפרים אשרי (תרע”ד-תשס”ג 1914-2003) נולד בקופישוק, ליטא ולמד בישיבות הגדולות קלם, פוניבז’ וסלבודקא. בשנת תרצ”ד (1934) הוא קיבל סמיכה מר’ אברהם דובער כהנא-שפירא ור’ לייב רובין מווילקומיר ורבנים נוספים וכיהן כרב בסלבודקא. במהלך המלחמה שהה הרב אשרי בגטו קובנא ושימש כעוזרו של הרב מקובנא. בשל מחלתו של הרב מקובנא הופנו שאלות רבות לרב אשרי. תשובותיו הודפסו לאחר המלחמה תחת השם “ממעמקים” יחד עם תשובות רבות מרבה של קובנא.
