Following its publication, almost every philosophic work cited and commented on this sefer. Within Judaism, the Guide was widely popular, with many Jewish communities requesting copies. However in some communities its study was not encouraged, as a less philosophical approach to Judaism was preferred.

לאחר הוצאתו לאור, כמעט כל ספרי הפילוסופיה שיצאו, ציטטו והעירו על ספר זה. בקרב הציבור היהודי התקבל המדריך באהדה ובתפוצה רבה, וקהילות רבות אף ביקשו העתק ממנו. עם זאת במספר קהילות לא עודדו את הלימוד בו מכיוון שהעדיפו גישה פחות פילוסופית ליהדות.
