Autograph letter by R. Yosef Eliyahu Henkin to R. Zalman Sorotzkin. He writes of a donation someone had asked him to forward to Chinuch Atzmai, as well as the donor’s request that they pray for him and his family.
He concludes the letter by writing that he had recently published his work Lev Ivra and requests that if R. Sorotzkin has the opportunity he should peruse it.
Includes the original envelope, as well as a transcript of a letter (dated 1957) sent by R. Zalman Sorotzkin, R. Yechezkel Sarna and R. Eliezer Yehuda Finkel to R. Henkin regarding Chinuch Atzmai.
R. Yosef Eliyahu Henkin (1881- 1973), was born in Klimavichy, and studied at the Slutzker Yeshiva under Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer. Known from a young age as brilliant and extremely diligent, he received Semicha from R. Meltzer, as well as from R Yaakov Dovid Wilovsky (RIDVAZ), R. Boruch Ber Leibowitz and R. Yechiel Michel Epstein (Oruch Ha’Shulchon). After serving as Rav in a number of Russian .towns, he immigrated to America in 1922. Upon arrival he was quickly recognized as one of the preeminent Poskim in the U.S.A. Renowned as a tremendous Talmid Chochom as well as great Tzaddik, in 1925 he became the director of Ezras Torah, directing the distribution of millions of dollars assistance to the needy, although he personally lived extremely frugally.

מכתב אוטוגרפי מאת רבי יוסף אליהו הענקין לר’ זלמן סורוצקין. הוא כותב על תרומה שמישהו ביקש ממנו להעביר לחינוך העצמאי, וכן על בקשת התורם שיתפללו עליו ועל משפחתו.
בסוף המכתב הוא מציין כי לאחרונה הוציא לאור את ספרו לב עיברי ומבקש מהרב סורוצקין לעיין בו כשיתאפשר.
כולל המעטפה המקורית, וכן תמליל של מכתב (משנת תשי”ז, 1957), שנשלח מאת ר’ זלמן סורוצקין, ר’ יחזקאל סרנא ור’ אליעזר יהודה פינקל לרב הענקין בנוגע לחנוך העצמאי.
ר’ יוסף אליהו הנקין (תרמ”א-תשל”ג 1881-1973) נולד בקלימאוויצ’י ולמד בישיבת סלוצק אצל ר’ איסר זלמן מלצר. שמו יצא לפניו מגיל צעיר כעילוי ומתמיד גדול והוסמך על ידי הרב מלצר, ר’ יעקב דוד וילובסקי (רידב”ז), ר’ ברוך בער ליבוביץ’ ור’ יחיאל מיכל אפשטיין (ערוך השולחן). לאחר כהונה כרב במספר ערים ברוסיה הוא היגר לאמריקה בשנת תרפ”ב (1922). עד מהרה הכירו בו כאחד מגדולי הפוסקים בארצות הברית, והוא הוערך כתלמיד חכם וצדיק עצום. בתרפ”ה (1925) הוא התמנה למנהל “עזרת תורה” ופיקח על חלוקת מיליוני דולרים לנזקקים, אף שהוא עצמו חי בדוחק עצום.
