Autograph letter regarding the precise definition of Halachic dusk and nightfall (72 minutes of Rabbeinu Tam), sent by Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski to the Satmar Rov. He writes, that he is presently studying in college, and is discussing with the faculty the exact time of nightfall. He suggests that the accepted practice of 72 minutes after sunset, is likely not applicable in the United States, and is likely only pertinent in Countries in the East. As is well known the subject of the precise timing of Halachic nightfall is the subject of much debate. The Satmar Rov was of the firm opinion that the time of “Rabbeinu Tam” as he practiced in Europe, is also applicable in the Unites States.
Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski (born 1930), is a scion of a great rabbinical family. He received rabbinical ordination in 1951 from the Skokie Yeshiva. In 1953, he enrolled at Milwaukee’s Marquette University, and subsequently graduated from its medical school in 1960, after which he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Recognized as an eminent psychiatrist, lecturer and spiritual leader. He is also a highly acclaimed author of over 80 books covering a broad range of topics.

מכתב אוטוגרפי בעניין ההגדרה ההלכתית המדויקת של שעת בין הערביים (72 דקות לפי רבינו תם), שכתב הרב ד”ר אברהם י. טווערסקי לאדמו”ר מסאטמר. הוא כותב, כי נכון לעכשיו הוא בלימודיו במכללה, ושוחח עם הפקולטה על הזמן המדויק של רדת הלילה. הוא מציע שהנוהג המקובל של 72 דקות לאחר השקיעה, ככל הנראה, אינו מתאים בארצות הברית, וככל הנראה רלוונטי רק ב”ארצות המזרח”. כידוע נושא העיתוי המדויק של רדת הלילה בהלכה הינו בעל דיונים רבים. האדמו”ר מסאטמר, סבר נחרצות כי מנהג הרבינו תם המקובל באירופה, מתאים גם בארצות הברית.
הרבי ד”ר אברהם י. טווערסקי (נולד בתר”צ (1930), היה צאצא למשפחה רבנית מפוארת. הוא הוסמך לרבנות בשנת תשי”א (1951) בישיבת סקוקי. בשנת תשי”ג (1953) נרשם לאוניברסיטת מרקט במילווקי, וסיים את לימודיו בבית הספר לרפואה בשנת תש”כ (1960). לאחר מכן עבר לפיטסבורג, פנסילבניה. הוכר כפסיכיאטר דגול, מרצה ומנהיג רוחני. הוא אף חיבר למעלה מ-80 ספרים במגוון רחב של נושאים שהתקבלו בהערכה עצומה.
