Rare autograph letter by R. Moshe Soloveitchik to R. Eliezer Silver. He writes that he just received a letter from his brother the Brisker Rav (who had escaped to Vilna) written on Wednesday the 22nd of Elul. He quotes the Brisker Rav’s letter stating that “from the visas sent from America there are no tangible results…and I don’t know if I’ll be able to obtain visas for my family, old and young, as there is no news from the consul……our eyes are turned to HaShem. It is self-understood that after the passing of the Gaon R. Chaim Ozer ZT”L, my situation is not good”. R. Moshe implores R. Silver that he should do all he can to assist the Brisker Rav in Vilna, whether through the Va’ad Ha’Yeshivos or Ezras Torah, or the Relief Committee… that he should have at least the basic necessities for his large family…”. Concluding with warm blessings, as well as the Brisker Rav’s address in Vilna.
R. Moshe Soloveitchik (1879-1941), was a son of R. Chaim Brisker and was a primary disciple of his father. He served in various rabbinical positions in Europe, and also headed the Tachkemoni Yeshiva in Warsaw, before immigrating to the United States in 1929 to serve as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan (RIETS). He was well known as great Lamdan and expert in the classic “Brisker Derech”. Father of R. Yosef Dov Soloveitchik of Boston New York, and R. Aaron Soloveitchik of Chicago.

מכתב אוטוגרפי נדיר שכתב ר’ משה סאלאוויצ’יק לר’ אליעזר סילבר. הוא כותב כי לאחרונה קיבל מאחיו הבריסקער רב מכתב שנכתב ביום רביעי כ”ב באלול. הוא מצטט מתוך מכתבו של הבריסקער רב “מהויזעס השלוחית מאמעריקא אין עוד כל תוצאות ממשית …… ועינינו מיחלות לחסדי ה’ …. כי אחרי פטירת הגרח”ע זצ”ל ……..”. ר’ משה ממנה את הר’ סילבר לעשות כל שביכולתו כדי לסייע לרב מבריסק בוילנא, דרך וועד הישיבות או עזרת תורה או מרעליף קאמיטע… שיהיו לו לפחות הצרכים הבסיסיים למשפחתו הברוכה…”. הוא חותם בברכות לבביות, וכן מציין את כתובתו של הבריסקער רב בווילנא.
ר’ משה סאלאוויצ’יק (תרל”ט- תש”א, 1879-1941), היה בנו של ר’ חיים בריסקער, ותלמידו המובהק של אביו. כיהן במשרות רבניות שונות ברחבי אירופה, וכן עמד בראשות ישיבת תחכמוני בוורשא. בשנת תרפ”ט 1929 עבר להתגורר באמריקה כדי לכהן כראש ישיבת רבינו יצחק אלחנן. נודע כלמדן עצום ובקיא בשיטת בריסק. אביהם של ר’ יוסף ב. סאלאוויצ’יק מבוסטון/ ניו יורק, ור’ אהרון סאלאוויצ’יק משיקאגו.
