Rare letter by the Rebbe regarding the custom of “Upsherin”. The Rebbe opens the letter with mention of the illness of the recipient’s mother-in-law and tells him that when he will be at the Friediker Rebbe’s grave he will pray for her recovery.
The Rebbe then continues regarding the Chassidic custom of giving an “Upsherin” to boys at the age of three, citing Chassidic and Halachic sources, including a quote of the Friediker Rebbe. He also cites that “Minhag Yisroel Torah Hee” and that the RaMBaM seems to say that a Minhag in Klal Yisroel has the status of a D’Oraisah. Interestingly, the Rebbe quotes the Sefer Shem Tov and says there is a “printing mistake” in the sefer.
R. Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902–1994), was one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the twentieth century. He was born in the town of Nikolayev, Russia to R. Levi Yitzchak and Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson. Known as a great genius, by the time he was seventeen, he had mastered the entire Talmud, and went on to receive Semicha from R. Yosef Rosen) Rogatchover Gaon( and R. Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg (Sridei Aish). In 1928, he married the daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, R. Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, whom he ultimately succeeded as Rebbe. In that capacity, he tirelessly dedicated himself to world Jewish outreach and he succeeded in establishing Chabad centers all over the world.

מכתב נדיר מהרבי בנושא מנהג ה”חלאקה”. בתחילת המכתב מזכיר הרבי את מחלתה של חמותו של מקבל המכתב ומציין כי בעת שיהיה אצל הציון של הפרידיקער רבי יתפלל לרפואתה.
בהמשך המכתב כותב הרבי בענייני המנהג החסידי לעשות “חלאקה” לבנים בגיל שלוש. הוא מצטט מקורות חסידיים והלכתיים רבים, ואף מביא ציטוט מהפרידיקער’ רבי. הוא כותב כי “מנהג בישראל תורה היא”, וכן כי נראה בשם הרמב”ם שלמנהג בכלל ישראל יש תוקף של דאורייתא. מעניין לציין כי הרבי מצטט מתוך הספר שם טוב ואומר כי נפלה בו “טעות דפוס”.
ר’ מנחם מנדל שניאורסון (תרס”ב-תשנ”ד 1902-1994), אחד המנהיגים המשפיעים ביותר במאה הקודמת, נולד בעיירת ניקולייב שברוסיה להוריו, ר’ לוי יצחק והרבנית חנה שניאורסון. הנער, שהתפרסם כעילוי, שלט בש”ס כולו בגיל שבע עשרה והוסמך לרבנות על ידי ר’ יוסף רוזן – הגאון מרוגאצ’וב, ור’ יחיאל יעקב וינברג, בעל השרידי אש. בשנת תרפ”ח (1928) נישא לבתו של האדמו”ר השישי מליובאוויטש, ר’ יוסף יצחק שניאורסון, שאת מקומו ירש על כס האדמו”רות. התמסר ללא לאות לקירוב רחוקים ברחבי העולם וייסד מרכזי חב”ד בכל העולם.
