Autograph letter (postcard) written to the Rabbanut in Yerusholayim regarding a Get (bill of divorce) sent from Brisk to Eretz Yisroel. The laws of Gittin are among the most complicated in Shulchon Oruch, particularly when the husband and wife reside in different countries, and it is necessary to appoint a “Shliach” (messenger).
Of particular interest is the fact that R. Simcha Zelig wrote the sender’s address as the address of the Brisker Rov, R. Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik. This is indicative of the way R. Simcha Zelig viewed his position as Dayan, subservient to the Rov of the city.
R. Simcha Zelig Reiger (1864-1942), learned under the illustrious R. Y.L. Diskin, and later under R. Chaim Soloveitchik as a talmid in the Volozhin Yeshiva. With the passing of R. Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, the Bais HaLevi in 1892, his son R. Chaim was offered the position as Rav of Brisk, and R. Chaim agreed on the condition that R. Simcha Zelig would accompany him to serve as the Dayan of the city. R. Simcha Zelig served with great distinction in this capacity, and was renowned as one of Lithuania’s foremost halachic authorities until his tragic martyrdom in the Holocaust.

מכתב אוטוגרפי (גלויה) שנכתבה לרבנות ירושלים, בעניין גט שנשלח מבריסק לארץ ישראל. הלכות גיטין הינן מהמסובכות ביותר בשולחן ערוך, בייחוד כאשר אין הבעל והאישה דרים במדינה אחת ויש צורך למנות שליח.
מעניין לציין כי ר’ שמחה זעליג כתב את כתובתו של הרב מבריסק, ר’ יצחק זאב סאלאוויציק, ככתובת השולח. מכאן אנו למדים את גישתו של ר’ שמחה זעליג למשרת הדיינות, כמתבטל בפני רב העיר.
ר’ שמחה זליג ריגר (תרכ”ד-תש”ב 1864-1942) למד אצל ר’ יהושע ליב דיסקין, ובהיותו תלמיד בישבת וואלאזין נתחבב מאד על רבו המובהק הגר”ח מבריסק. כשהוצעה להגר”ח משרת הרבנות בבריסק, בשנת תרנ”ב 1892, עקב פטירת אביו ה’בית הלוי’, התנה מתחילה שגם ימנו לדיין בבריסק את תלמידו החביב ר’ שמחה זליג. שימש בהצטיינות במשרת מו”צ דבריסק קרוב ליובל שנים עד שנרצח בשואה, ונחשב מגדולי הפוסקים בליטא בדורו.
