Signed letter to R. Dushinsky regarding Agunos following the Holocaust.
In the aftermath of the Holocaust one of the most pressing and difficult concerns was the tragic plight of Agunos whose husbands disappeared in the horrors of the Holocaust. The unprecedented circumstances were tackled by many of the greatest surviving rabbinical figures of the era who devoted their best efforts to solving these complex and heart wrenching halachic queries. The Laws of Agunos are one of the most complicated in Talmudic law and require gathering testimony from persons who had witnessed the death of the missing husband.
R. Chaim Yaakov Rottenberg (1909-1990), was a son and Talmid of R. Mordechai Rottenberg, Rov of Antwerp. He also learned in Yeshivos Telz and Mir. He served as a Dayan in Antwerp alongside his father. After surviving the Holocaust, he returned to Antwerp and was instrumental in the reestablishment of the Kehillo in Antwerp. He later served as a Rov in Paris until his passing.

מכתב חתום לרב דושינסקי בעניין עגונות אחרי השואה.
בעקבות השואה, אחד הנושאים הדוחקים והקשים ביותר היה מצבן הטראגי של עגונות שבעליהן נעלמו באימי השואה. רבים מגדולי הרבנים ששרדו את השואה התייחסו למצב חסר תקדים זה והשקיעו את מירב המאמצים לפתירת שאלות הלכתיות סבוכות וטעונות אלו. הלכות עגונות הן מן המורכבות ביותר, והתרתן דורשת איסוף עדויות מאנשים שהיו עדים למות הבעל הנעדר.
ר’ חיים יעקב רוטנברג (תרס”ט-תש”נ 1909-1990) היה בנו ותלמידו של ר’ מרדכי רוטנברג, רבה של אנטוורפן. הוא למד בישיבות טלז ומיר ובהמשך כיהן כדיין באנטוורפן לצד אביו. לאחר ששרד את השואה הוא שב לאנטוורפן וסייע בהקמת הקהילה מחדש באנטוורפן. לימים הוא שימש כרב בפריז עד פטירתו.
