Rare autograph letter by R. Yosef Rosen, the famed Rogatchover Gaon. Dated Rosh Chodesh Nissan 1930, to his “friend” R. Dovid Potash of Tel Aviv, with best wishes for a Joyful and Kosher Pesach. Although the Rogatchover responded to a vast amount of Torah queries, personal letters are extremely rare.
R. Yosef Rosen (1858-1936), was born in Rogatchov and studied in the Slutzk Yeshiva under the Bais Ha’Levy together with R. Chaim Soloveitchik who was five years his senior. He subsequently studied under R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin in Shklov. In 1889, he became Rav of the Chassidic community in Dvinsk which he served for nearly fifty years alongside R. Meir Simcha Ha’Cohen who was the Rav of the Misnagdim there. He was a Talmudic genius, famous for both his lightning grasp and prodigious memory coupled with tremendous diligence. מכתב נדיר בכתב ידו של ר’ יוסף רוזן, הגאון הרוגאצ’ובר הנודע.
תאריך המכתב: ר”ח ניסן תר”ץ (1930), נכתב עבור ידידו ר’ דוד פוטש מתל אביב, עם איחולים לפסח כשר ושמח. למרות שהרוגאצ’ובר השיב למספר עצום של שאלות בהלכה, מכתבים אישיים ממנו נדירים ביותר.
ר’ יוסף רוזן (תרי”ח-תרצ”ו 1858-1936) נולד ברוגאצ’וב ולמד בישיבת סלוצק אצל בעל הבית הלוי יחד עם ר’ חיים סולובייצ’יק, שהיה מבוגר ממנו בחמש שנים. לאחר מכן למד אצל ר’ יהושע לייב דיסקין בשקלוב. בשנת תרמ”ט (1889) התמנה לרב הקהילה החסידית בדווינסק, שם כיהן כחמישים שנה לצד ר’ מאיר שמחה הכהן, שהיה רב “המתנגדים” במקום. היה גאון עצום, והצטיין בתפיסתו המבריקה ובזיכרונו המפליא בשילוב שקדנות עצומה. מחבר ספר צפנת פענח.
