Rare autograph personal letter by R. Shneur Kotler to his grandparents, R. Isser Zalman and Rebbetzin Baila Hindel Meltzer. He asks for an update concerning the health of R. Isser Zalman, gives an update on the welfare of the family in Lakewood and enquires regarding the printing of the Seforim of R. Isser Zalman. Concluding with warm wishes for a good year as well as regards from R. Dov and Sarah Schwartzman.
Following his letter is a long autograph paragraph of blessings for a new year by R. Aaron Kotler.
R. Aaron Kotler (1892-1963), was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with his great diligence. He served as Rosh Yeshiva in Slutzk and Kletsk and established Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, N.J., which today is one of the largest and most prestigious Yeshivos. Known as the pre-eminent Rosh Yeshiva and Torah leader of his generation he was pivotal in the reestablishment of Yeshivos after the Holocaust. During the war while R. Aaron escaped to America via Japan, R. Shneur escaped via Vilna to Eretz Yisroel. He spent the war years under the tutelage of his grandfather R. Isser Zalman, as well as attending shiurim of the Brisker Rov.

מכתב אוטוגרפי אישי ונדיר שכתב ר’ שניאור קוטלר לסביו וסבתו, ר’ איסר זלמן והרבנית ביילא הינדל מלצר. הוא דורש בשלומו ובריאותו של ר’ איסר זלמן, מספר על חייהם בלייקווד, ושואל אותה בעניין הדפסת ספרי ר’ איסר זלמן. הוא מסיים בברכות נלבבות לשנה טובה וכן מוסר דרישת שלום מהר’ דב והרבנית שרה שוורצמן.
אחר המכתב הזה ישנוה פסקה אוטוגרפית ארוכה ובה ברכות לשנה החדשה מאת ר’ אהרון קוטלר.
ר’ אהרן קוטלר, (תרנ”ב – תשכ”ג, 1892-1963), התפרסם כבר בגיל צעיר בשל מוחו המבריק יחד עם שקידתו והתמדתו העצומה. הוא כיהן כראש ישיבה בסלוצק ובקלעצק, וייסד את ישיבת “בית מדרש גבוה” בלייקווד, ניו ג’רזי. כיום, זוהי אחת הישיבות הגדולות והנחשבות ביותר. הוא נודע כראש הישיבה וכמנהיג הדגול ביותר בדורו, והיה ממקימי עולם הישיבות מחדש אחרי השואה. במהלך השואה, בעוד שהר’ קוטלר נמלט לאמריקה דרך יפן, ר’ שניאור עלה דרך ווילנה לארץ ישראל. בשנות השואה למד תורה מפי סבו ר’ איסר זלמן וכן נכח בשיעורי הרב מבריסק.
