Document of permission for a young man in Prague to get married, signed by R. Yechezkel Landau Chief Rabbi of Prague.
At the time, the law required an official document of approval from the Rav of the city in order for a man to marry. This particular document was handwritten and signed by R. Yaakov Yitzchak Segal. Following his signature, R. Yechezkel Landau writes “Gam Mitzidi Hareshus C’Nal, Yechezkel. (I too concur with the above permission, Yechezkel)”.
R. Yechezkel Landau (1713-1793) was born in Opatow and studied in the great yeshivas of Ludmir and Brody. He served first as a Dayan in Brody and later as a Rav in Yampol. Whilst in Yampol, his reputation preceded him to the renowned Jewish community of Prague who retained him as Rav, where he served until his passing. He was held in awe by his rabbinical contemporaries as well as the masses, and was greatly respected in government circles. World famous as one of the most prominent rabbinical leaders of his generation, he led a great Yeshiva and authored many important works, including his classic halachic responsa Noda B’Yehuda (after which he is known), Dagul Mer’vavah on the Shulchan Aruch and Tzion l’Nefesh Chaya (abbreviated as Tz’lach) on the Talmud.

תעודת אישור נישואין לבחור בפראג, חתום על ידי ר’ יחזקאל לנדא, הרב הראשי של פראג.
באותה תקופה, החוק דרש מגברים המבקשים להתחתן להציג תעודת אישור רשמית מרב העיר. מסמך מסוים זה נכתב בכתב יד ונחתם על ידי ר’ יעקב יצחק סגל. לאחר חתימתו, כותב ר’ יחזקאל לנדא “גם מצדי הרשות כנ”ל, יחזקאל”.
ר’ יחזקאל לנדא (תע”ג-תקנ”ג 1713-1793) נולד באופטוב ולמד בישיבות לודמיר וברודי המעטירות. הוא שימש תחילה כדיין בברודי ולאחר מכן כרב בימפול. שמו הלך לפניו בעודו בימפול, והקהילה היהודית הנודעת בפראג בחרה בו כרב. הוא כיהן במקום עד פטירתו. חבריו הרבנים והקהל הרחב העריצוהו עד מאוד, וגם אנשי הממשל רחשו לו כבוד רב. נודע ברחבי העולם כאחד מגדולי המנהיגים הרבניים בדורו וכתב ספרים חשובים רבים כולל השו”ת ההלכתי הקלאסי “נודע ביהודה” (שעל שמו הוא קרוי), “דגול מרבבה” על השולחן ערוך ו”ציון לנפש חיה” (ראשי תיבות צל”ח) על הש”ס.
