Historical letter signed by R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky to R. Moshe Blau of Agudas Yisroel in Yerusholayim regarding the parents of R. Avrohom Kalmanowitz. He writes that R. Aaron Aryeh Kalmanowitz and his wife, parents of R. Avrohom the Rav of Tiktin, have escaped Soviet Russia and are immigrating to Eretz Yisroel. R. Aaron Aryeh Kalmanowitz served for many years as the Rov of Anappol near Kiev. R. Chaim Ozer requests that they be allocated an apartment in “Batei Nathan” or “Batei Brodie”, particularly as they endured much suffering in Russia.
R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky (1863-1940), was born into a distinguished rabbinical family as was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with great diligence. He initially learned in Eishishok and later in Volozhin studying under R. Chaim Soloveitchik. He married the daughter of R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodensky, the leading Rov of Vilna (son-in-law of R. Yisroel Salanter), whom he later succeeded. He dedicated his life to the needs of the Jewish People and was recognized as the leading Posek and spiritual head of his generation, consulted on virtually every Jewish communal issue. He played a key role in preserving Lithuanian Yeshivos during the beginning of the Communist era, and led the yeshivas of Poland and Russia after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, arranging for these yeshivas to relocate to Lithuanian cities.

מכתב מעניין חתום על ידי ר’ חיים עוזר גרודזנסקי לר’ משה בלוי מאגודת ישראל בירושלים, בנוגע להוריו של הר’ אברהם קלמנוביץ. הרב כותב שהר’ אהרון אריה קלמנוביץ ורעייתו, הוריו של הר’ אברהם – רב העיר טיקטין – ברחו מרוסיה הסובייטית ועלו לארץ ישראל. ר’ אברהם אריה קלמנוביץ שימש שנים רבות כרב העיר אניפולי הסמוכה לעיר קייב. ר’ חיים עוזר מבקש שיקבלו דירה בשכונת “בתי נתן” או “בתי ברוידה”, בפרט לאור הסבל הרב שסבלו ברוסיה.
ר’ חיים עוזר גרודזנסקי (תרכ”ג-ת”ש, 1863-1940), נולד למשפחה רבנית מפורסמת ונודע עוד בצעירותו במוחו החריף והתמדתו העצומה. למד בתחילה באיישישוק ואחר כך בוולוז’ין אצל ר’ חיים סולובייצ’יק. נישא לבת הר’ אליהו אליעזר גרודנסקי, גדול רבני וילנא (חתן ר’ ישראל סלנטר), ובהמשך מילא את מקומו. הקדיש את חייו לטובת אחיו היהודים, ונודע כגדול הפוסקים והמנהיגים הרוחניים בדורו. ענה לשאלות הלכתיות מכל רחבי העולם ונועץ בכל ענין ציבורי יהודי. מילא תפקיד אינסטרומנטלי בקיום הישיבות הליטאיות בתקופה הקומוניסטית, והציל את ישיבות פולין ורוסיה במהלך הפלישה הנאצית לפולין בתרצ”ט (1939), כשסידר לישיבות אלו מעבר לערים לא כבושות בליטא.
