Autograph card by the Alter of Novardok written to a talmid who had left Yeshiva. The Alter writes that he feels it would be beneficial for him to return and mentions some other outstanding Talmidim who are in that particular Yeshiva.
R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz (1847–1919), known as the Alter of Novardok, was a close talmid of R. Yisroel Salanter and the founder of the Novardok network of Yeshivos and its “Derech Ha’Mussar”. These Yeshivos were located throughout Poland and Russia, including the towns of Novardok, Berditchev, Shavel, Dvinsk, Warsaw and Minsk. He personally traveled to all of the Yeshivos throughout Russia to supervise and lead these Yeshivos. In 1919, a typhoid epidemic broke out and R. Horowitz’s home was soon filled with the sick to whom he personally attended. Not long after, he contracted the disease himself and was niftar.

ר’ יוסף יויזל הורוויץ (תר”ז-תרע”ט 1847-1919), המוכר בכינויו “הסבא מנובהרדוק”, היה תלמיד קרוב של ר’ ישראל סלנטר ומייסד רשת הישיבות נובהרדוק ו”דרך המוסר” של נובהרדוק. ישיבות אלו מוקמו ברחבי פולין ורוסיה, כולל בערים נובהרדוק, ברדיטשוב, שאבל, דבינסק, ווארשא, מינסק ועוד. הוא נסע באופן אישי לכל הישיבות ברחבי אירופה וטיפל בצרכיהם. בשנת תרע”ט (1919) פרצה מגפת טיפוס, ועד מהרה התמלא ביתו של ר’ הורוויץ בחולים שבהם טיפל באופן אישי. כעבור זמן לא רב הוא נדבק במחלה ונפטר.
