Rare Autograph letter by R. Yitzchok Isaac HaLevi to Zev Ya’avetz.
The letter confirms what seems to be an agreement between these two eminent historians, which guaranteed collaboration in the publication of the Ya’vetz historical works, written according to R. HaLevi’s methodology, following the publication of R. HaLevi’s works. In this letter, dated 1906, R. HaLevi writes “I received your letter and I am glad to see that we are finally in agreement on the foundations of Jewish history”.
R. Yitzchok Isaac HaLevi (Rabinowitz) (1847- 1914), one of the founders of the Agudas Yisroel organization, was a brilliant Talmudist, renowned for his classic historical work Doros Horishonim, which was written as a rebuttal to many of the prevalent non-orthodox accounts of Jewish history. He held a number of communal positions in his early adulthood, including president of the Volozhin Yeshiva, through which he was influential in having R. Chaim Soloveitchik appointed as Rosh Yeshiva. A talented leader, with many important connections in his native Lithuania, as well in Germany where he resided, he was instrumental in uniting the leading Rabbonim of Western and Eastern Europe in forming the Agudas Yisroel World Movement.

מכתב אוטוגפרי לההיסטריון זאב יעב”ץ בדבר הסכם ביניהם שלפי הנראה מבטיח הרב הלוי שיעזור ליעבץ בהדפסת ספריו, שייכתבו ברוח הביקורת של הרב הלוי, לאחר שיגמר הדפסת ספריו שלו. במכתב, המתוארך תרס”ו, כותב הרב הלוי “שמחתי לראות כי סוף סוף יהיה לנו לפה אחת בכל יסודי דברי ימי ישראל”.
הרב יצחק אייזיק הלוי (תר”ז-תרע”ד), ממייסדי אגודת ישראל, היה גאון ות”ח מופלג שנדוע בעיקר בשביל ספרו הקלאסי ‘דורות הראשונים’, ספר היסטורי שנכתב כדי להוכיח טעותם של חוקרי היסטוריה החילונים. בצעירותו החזיק בכמה משרות ציבוריות, ביניהם נשיא ישיבת וואלאזין, ובמשרתו זאת פעל למנות הגר”ח סאלאווייציק כראש ישיבה. כמנהיג מוכשר ניצל קשריו עם גדולי ליטא, ארץ מולדתו, לאחד אותם עם רבני אשכנז, מקום מגוריו, בייסודה של אגודת ישראל העולמי.
