Halachos Gedolos (BeHaG). Vienna 1810. Hundreds of Unpublished References/Glosses!
Sefer Halachos Gedolos, with library stamp (in Russian, “I.B. Soloveitchik Brest-Litvosk”) and hundreds of unpublished notes and references handwritten by the Beis HaLevi. The vast majority of these notes are short references, with a few longer glosses. Additionally, on the reverse side of the title page are five lines handwritten by the Beis HaLevi regarding the authorship of the sefer, (which is a matter of dispute), quoting the RaMBaN and referencing other Rishonim.
R. Yosef Dov (Yoshe Ber) Soloveitchik (1820-1892), was a great grandson of R. Chaim Volozhiner. Known as an extraordinarily brilliant child, he learned in the great Yeshiva of Volozhin. He also spent some time in Brod where he learned with R. Shlomo Kluger. In 1854, he was appointed as Rosh Yeshiva in Volozhin, where he served until 1865, whereupon he was appointed to become Rav in Slutzk. Amongst his disciples from that period were R. Yosef Rosen, the Rogatchover Gaon (who learned with his son R. Chaim) and R. Zalman Sender Shapiro. He fiercely opposed the Reform movement and eventually, as a result of the activities of the Maskilim, he left Slutzk and moved to Warsaw. When the Rav of Brisk, R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin, left for Eretz Yisroel in 1877, the Beis Ha’Levy succeeded him as Rav. He led the community of Brisk until his passing, when he was succeeded by his son R. Chaim, who in turn was succeeded by his son R. Velvel and until today the name Soloveitchik remains synonymous with “Brisk”.

ספר הלכות גדולות עם חותמת ספרייה (ברוסית, “י.ב. סולובייצ’יק ברסט-ליטבוסק”) ומאות הערות ומקורות שלא נדפסו עד עתה בכתב ידו של בית הלוי. רובן הגדול הן מקורות קצרים בתוספת כמה הערות ארוכות יותר. בנוסף, בצד השני של עמוד השער מופיעות חמש שורות בכתב ידו של בית הלוי בעניין זהותו של מחבר הספר השנויה במחלוקת. הוא מצטט את דברי הרמב”ן בעניין זה ומביא את חוות דעתם של ראשונים אחרים.
ר’ יוסף דוב (יאשע בער) סולובייצ’יק (תק”פ-תרנ”ב 1820-1892) היה נינו של ר’ חיים מוולוז’ין. הוא נודע כעילוי מגיל צעיר ולמד בישיבה הגדולה בוולוז’ין. כמו כן, הוא שהה לזמן מה בבראד ולמד עם ר’ שלמה קלוגר. בשנת תרי”ד (1854) הוזמן לעמוד בראש ישיבת וולוז’ין, והוא נשא תפקיד זה עד לשנת תרכ”ה (1865), אז התמנה לרבה של סלוצק. בנוסף לתפקידיו הרבניים בסלוצק, הוא היה מעורה היטב בחינוך נערי העיר. בין תלמידיו מאותה תקופה נמנו ר’ יוסף רוזן (הרוגוצ’ובער) ור’ זלמן סנדר שפירא. הוא לחם בעוז נגד הרפורמים ולבסוף נאלץ לעזוב את סלוצק ולעבור לוורשא כתוצאה מפעולות המשכילים.כאשר הרב מבריסק, ר’ יהושע לייב דיסקין, עלה לארץ ישראל בשנת תרל”ז (1877), מילא הבית הלוי את מקומו כרב בבריסק. הוא הנהיג את הקהילה בבריסק עד לפטירתו. בנו ר’ חיים מילא את מקומו, בהמשך עבר התפקיד לנכדו ר’ יצחק זאב, ועד היום נותרה משפחת סולובייצ’יק כשם נרדף ל”בריסק”.
