R. Tzvi Hirsch Ha’Levy Horowitz (1730-1817), was the son of R. Pinchos Horowitz (the Haflo’ah) Rebbe of the Chasam Sofer. With the appointment of the Haflo’ah as Rav of Frankfurt, R. Tzvi Hirsch stood at the helm of the local Yeshiva and was known for his penetrating shiurim. In his work Lachmei Todah, he writes of the state of spiritual decline of the city and of his battles against the Reform Movement who sought to move Shabbos observance to Sunday, to the extent that he had trouble finding a minyan in his Shul.
R. Ezriel Hildesheimer (1820-1899), was a student of the Aruch L’Ner and Chacham Yitzchok Bernays of Hamburg and was one the leading Torah authorities of his generation. From 1851 to 1869, he served as Rav of Eisenstadt, where he established a prestigious Yeshiva. In 1869, he was appointed as Rav of Berlin, where in addition to his rabbinical duties, he established the Beis Midrash L’Rabbonim, commonly known as “The Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary”, where many of the German Rabbonim up until the Holocaust studied.

חידושים ודרשות לר’ צבי הירש הלוי הורוביץ, בנו של בעל ה”הפלאה”. ספר זה הינו החלק השני של החיבור “מחנה לוי”, שנדפס בסוף ספר “המקנה” לבעל ההפלאה. עם חותמת ותוית ספר מר’ עזריאל הילדסהיימר.
ר’ צבי הירש הלוי הורוביץ, ת”ץ – תקע”ז (1730-1817), היה בנו של הרב פנחס הורוביץ (בעל ה”הפלאה”), רבו של החת”ם סופר. עם מינויו של ההפלאה כרבה של פרנקפורט, עמד הרב צבי הירש בראש הישיבה המקומית ונודע בשיעוריו העמוקים.
בחיבורו “לחמי תודה”, הוא מתאר את הירידה הרוחנית של אנשי העיר ועל מאבקיו נגד התנועה הרפורמית, שביקשה לעקור את השבת ולהעבירה ליום ראשון, עד שקשה היה למצוא מניין מתפללים לבית הכנסת שלו.
הרב עזריאל הילדסהיימר (תק”ף-תרנ”ט, 1820-1899) היה תלמידו של בעל ה”ערוך לנר” ושל חכם יצחק ברנייס מהמבורג. בין השנים תרי”א-תרכ”ט, (1851-1869) שימש כרב העיר אייזנשטאדט, שם הקים ישיבה מעטירה. בשנת תרכ”ט (1869) הוכתר לרבה של ברלין, שם הקים, בנוסף לתפקידיו כרב העיר, את “בית המדרש לרבנים”, שהיה מוכר יותר בכינויו “ישיבת הילדסהיימר לרבנים”. הרבה מרבני אשכנז למדו בישיבה זאת, עד לפרוץ מלחמת העולם השניה.
