This sefer was in manuscript form for hundreds of years until it was finally published with notes by R. Chaim Leib Auerbach. With an autograph inscription to R. Nachum Esrog, Rav of Tzfas.
R. Chaim Yehuda Leib Auerbach (1887-1954), was one of the most prominent scholars of the old Yishuv in Yerusholayim and father of R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach. He was the founder of a number of important Torah institutions in Yerusholayim including the famed Yeshiva Sha’ar Ha’Shamayim for the study of Kabbalah. During the tumultuous days of WW1, he was forced into hiding and during that period, worked on the publication of the Sefer Chacham Lev. With approbations of both R. Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld and R. Kook. R. Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld mentions the notes added by R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach who was a young man of seventeen at the time.

ר’ חיים לייב אוירבך (תרמ”ז-תשי”ד 1887-1954) היה אחד מתלמידי החכמים הנודעים ביישוב הישן בירושלים ואביו של ר’ שלמה זלמן אוירבך. הוא ייסד מספר מוסדות תורניים חשובים בירושלים כולל ישיבת שער השמים המפורסמת ללימוד קבלה. בימי הסער של מלחמת העולם הראשונה הוא נאלץ לרדת למחתרת, ובמשך תקופה זו שקד על הוצאת הספר “חכם לב”. כולל מכתבי הסכמה מאת ר’ יוסף חיים זוננפלד והרב קוק. ר’ יוסף חיים זוננפלד מזכיר את ההערות מפרי עטו של ר’ שלמה זלמן אוירבך, שהיה נער בן שבע עשרה באותה עת.
