Rare identification card that belonged to a Jew man living in Nazi Germany, with an anti-Semitic bold yellow “J” on the first 2 pages.
On October 5, 1938, in accordance with the Nuremberg Laws, the Nazis issued a decree invalidating a Jew’s passports and papers until they were marked with a “J” for “Jude”. This was part of calculated scheme to identify and thus persecute the Jews. Later, on January 1, 1939, the Nazis added a proviso which required the Jews with “non-Jewish” names to also add the name “Israel” or “Sarah”. In these papers the name “Israel” was added.
In today’s age, with Holocaust denial unfortunately rampant, artifacts like these are important evidence of one of our people’s darkest hours.

תעודת זהות נדירה שהשתייכה ליהודי שהתגורר בגרמניה הנאצית, עם “J” צהוב אנטישמי מודגש בשני העמודים הראשונים.
ב- 5 באוקטובר תרח”צ (1938), בהתאם לחוקי נירנברג, הוציאו הנאצים חוק המבטל את דרכוני היהודים עד אשר סומנו ב-“J” המסמל “ג’וד” (יהודי). סימון זה היה חלק מתוכנית מחושבת שנועדה לזהות ובכך לרדוף את היהודים. אחר כך, ב-1 בינואר תרצ”ט (1939), הוסיפו הנאצים סעיף המחייב את היהודים הקרויים בשמות “לא- יהודיים” להוסיף גם את השם “ישראל” או “שרה”. למסמך זה הוסף השם “ישראל”.
בימינו, כאשר הכחשת השואה היא תופעה נפוצה למרבה הצער, עתיקות כגון אלו מהוות עדות חשובה לאחת התקופות הקשות ביותר בתולדות עמנו.
