Silverstone, who served as the Vice President of the Agudas Ha’Rabonim, writes (16b) “When I was in New York I heard that those who attacked the Chief Rabbi R. Yaakov Yoseph admitted that R. Yosef of Vilna was a well-known sage and righteous person, but R. Yaakov Yosef of New York is a simple person”. This highlights one of the most tragic stories of the American Rabbinate. הגדה עם פירוש “קרבן פסח” לר’ גדליה סילברסטון, סגן-נשיא אגודת הרבנים. בפירושו כותב ר’ סילברסטון (טז:) “כשהייתי בניו יורק, שמעתי שאלו שתקפו את הרב הראשי הר’ יעקב יוסף, הודו שהר’ יוסף מוילנא היה תלמיד חכם נודע וצדיק. עם זאת, האיש הזה שיושב בניו יורק אינו הר’ יעקב יוסף, אלא אדם פשוט”. שורה זאת מדגישה את אחת הפרשות הכאובות ביותר בתולדות רבנות ארה”ב.
