Sifra/ Toras Kohanim on Vayikra, the personal copy of R. Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai, CHIDA.
On the title page there are numerous signatures, some are erased. On the upper left part of the depicted arch one can make out the words “I have purchased with my money to serve my Master, Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai S”T”. Beside that signed inscription is a large calligraphic curl in which is, the name “Chaim Yosef Dovid”. Additionally, on the reverse side of the title page there is a gloss possibly handwritten by the CHIDA.
R. Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai (1724-1806), was one of the greatest Torah scholars and authors of his generation. He studied under the Ohr HaChaim and the RaShaSH and was a close contemporary of R. Yom Tov (MaHaRIT) Algazi. He was a prolific author writing more than 80 works on many aspects of Torah. His Seforim were received with great acclaim and are classics of Torah scholarship.

על עמוד השער ישנן חתימות רבות, חלק מהן מחוקות. בחלק השמאלי העליון של הקשת המצוירת ניתן לזהות את המלים: “מקנת כספי לעבודת קוני הצעיר חיים יוסף דוד אזולי ס”ט” לצד הקדשה חתומה זו ישנו סלסול קליגרפי ובתוכו השם “חיים יוסף דוד”. בנוסף, בצידו האחורי של עמוד השער ישנה הערה, יתכן בכתב יד החיד”א.
ר’ חיים יוסף דוד אזולאי (תפ”ד – תקס”ו, 1724-1806), היה מתלמידי החכמים והמחברים הגדולים ביותר בדורו. למד תורה מפי האור החיים והרש”ש, ומקורב ביותר לר’ יום טוב (מהרי”ט) אלגזי. הוא היה מחבר מוכשר וכתב למעלה מ-80 חיבורים על היבטים שונים של התורה. ספריו התקבלו בשבחים רבים ומשמשים את לומדי התורה עד ימינו.
